After the success of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET in 1984, many a movie that moulded together slasher thrills and supernatural chills was rushed into production - from SLAUGHTERHOUSE ROCK (1988) to THE HORROR SHOW (1989) and Wes Craven's own SHOCKER (1989). None, however, were quite as notable nor as notorious as the bombastic blood-spiller BAD DREAMS from 1987, which roped in its own Freddy Krueger alumni with sexy Scream Queen starlet Jennifer Ruben (from A NIGHTMARE ON ELM ST 3: THE DREAM WARRIORS). Also starring the late, great B-thespian Richard Lynch (CUT AND RUN) as a Jim Jones-style reverend who begins to avenge his creepy cult of followers from beyond-the-grave, BAD DREAMS features some frantic and ferocious special effects, plenty of tormented teens and some of the finest frights of its decade! Featuring the legendary Bruce Abbott (RE-ANIMATOR) and produced by Hollywood heavyweight Gale Anne Hurd (ALIENS), whilst featuring a screenplay from DIE HARD's Steven E. de Souza, it is no wonder that BAD DREAMS became one of the most popular slasher classics of the 1980s... and 88 Films is proud to present this work of gruesome genius in horrific HD! It might just stop you getting a good night's kip! Right on the heels of the riotous Go to Hell Bastards: Detective Bureau 2 3 Seijun Suzuki unleashed what would come to be seen as his true breakthrough the film that would cement the Suzuki sensibility: Youth of the Beast [Yajû no seishun]. A kaleidoscopic fantasia that contains youth and beast only insofar as 1963 pop/youth culture was that violently upstart thing — not unlike the yakuza? And so Youth of the Beast is a yakuza tale with a premise like Akira Kurosawa's Yôjinbô but denuded of an easy definition of which side is which. It stars Suzuki's iconic '60s regular Jô Shishido with his dare-you-to-call-them-out artificial cheek implants like new acting blasphemy. There are drug-addled whores gunfights in a new colour apocalypse and at least one alien landscape: the sudden mind-searing eruption of a sulphur yellow desert like an action -figure playset with overspill of unbridled lust... Suzuki's infectious go-for-broke energy is assisted by a telephoto lens that serves at once as phallus and yoni in the masterful Minnelli-worthy 'Scope framing. His film would go on to inspire John Woo's forthcoming remake titled Day of the Beast; Nikkatsu have in recent times deemed this movie one of their treasures. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Youth of the Beast in a Dual Format (Blu-ray + DVD) edition based on their new HD master. Bonus Features: New high-definition 1080p presentation of the film on the Blu-ray and progressive encode on the DVD. New and improved optional English subtitles 36-PAGE BOOKLET featuring a new essay by Frederick Veith and rare archival imagery

Joining them on the road will be the Daily Telegraph journalist who came up with the whole crazy idea in the first place Abigail Fix (Leonie Benesch).

Before he created Westworld and Jurassic Park, Michael Crichton first blurred the line between science fiction and science fact with his breakout success The Andromeda Strain. Two years after the novel s publication, Robert Wise (The Haunting) directed the film adaptation, a nail-biting blend of clinically-realised docudrama and astonishing sci-fi visuals that ushered in a new subgenre: the killer virus biological thriller. A government satellite crashes outside a small town in New Mexico and within minutes, every inhabitant of the town is dead, except for a crying baby and an elderly derelict. The satellite and the two survivors are sent to Wildfire, a top-secret underground laboratory equipped with a nuclear self-destruct mechanism to prevent the spread of infection in case of an outbreak. Realising that the satellite brought back a lethal organism from another world, a team of government scientists race against the clock to understand the extraterrestrial virus codenamed Andromeda before it can wipe out all life on the planet. Aided by innovative visual effects by Douglas Trumbull (2001: A Space Odyssey, Silent Running) and an unforgettable avant-garde electronic music score by Gil Melle (The Sentinel), Wise s suspense classic still haunts to this day, and is presented here in a stunning, exclusive new restoration from the original negative.
