This fantasy monster movie sees a family battling to save their little girl from a terrifying creature.
Celebrated as the 'Godfather of British Horror', Pete Walker is one of the most controversial exploitation filmmakers of the '60s and '70s. Graduating from saucy sex comedies and gangland dramas, Walker finally found tabloid infamy making gore-splattered horror movies (or terror movies as he preferred to call them). His first X-rated thriller Die Screaming, Marianne shocked audiences, and subsequent films like House of Whipcord established his reputation for sadistic and bloody horror, cementing his status as the biggest cult British filmmaker of his generation. Now for the very first time, Walker's seventies' horror movies are collected on Blu-ray in this terrifying new box-set, starring a host of famous faces: Robin Askwith (Horror Hospital), Stephanie Beacham (Inseminoid), Ann Michelle (Virgin Witch), Susan Penhaligon (The Uncanny), Luan Peter (Hammer's Lust for a Vampire) and his favourite actress, and omnipresent 'scary old lady', Sheila Keith. The Pete Walker Heritage Collection brings together Die Screaming, Marianne (1971), The Flesh and Blood Show (1972), House of Whipcord (1974), Frightmare (1974), House of Mortal Sin (1976) Schizo (1977) and The Comeback (1978), all presented here in brand new HD restorations, and featuring a scary array of exclusive extras, including brand-new interviews with Walker himself. Almost getting it kind of together. Following the urban adventures of a group of 20-something women the series focuses on Hannah Horvath (Dunham) and her complicated web of NYC friends ex-friends boyfriends and ex-boyfriends. This season Hannah forges ahead with her dream of being a bestselling author and even starts to earn a little cash but her enthusiasm is tempered by the responsibility she feels for her now-ex Adam (Adam Driver) convalescing after his S1-finale accident. Let down by work and still lonely after calling things off with Charlie Marnie (Allison Williams) needs her best friend and former roommate more than ever but lingering awkwardness - and some surprising turns - only drive a wedge further between them. Meanwhile Jessa (Jemima Kirke) meets her new inlaws and attempts to live the married life and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) gives Ray (Alex Karpovsky) another chance at a relationship. The girls may have their ups and downs but the show's raw poignancy and fresh humor remain constant. And Season 2 of Girls is as addictive as ever.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa — the hugely acclaimed Japanese director famous for his groundbreaking, existential horror films such as Cure and Kairo [Pulse] — set Cannes alight in 2008 with this highly topical film: an eerie, poignant reflection on the mass uncertainty sweeping the world. When Ryuhei Sasaki (played by Teruyuki Kagawa) is unceremoniously dumped from his ‘safe’ company job, his family's happy, humdrum life is put at risk. Unwilling to accept the shame of unemployment, the loyal salaryman decides not to tell anyone, instead leaving home each morning in suit and tie with briefcase, spending his days searching for work and lining up for soup with the homeless. Outstanding performances; serene, elegant direction; and Kurosawa's trademark chills are evident as he ratchets up the unsettling atmosphere and the grim hopelessness of Sasaki's unemployment. Tremors didn't actually break any new ground (even though its tunneling worm monsters certainly did), but it revved up the classic monster-movie formulas of the 1950s with such energetic enthusiasm and humour that it made everything old seem new again. It's also got a cast full of enjoyable actors who clearly had a lot of fun making the film, and director Ron Underwood strikes just the right balance of comedy and terror as a band of small-town rednecks battles a lot of really nasty-looking giant worms. The special effects are great, the one-liners fly fast and furious between heroes Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward (and yes, that's country star Reba McEntire packin' awesome firepower), and it's all done with the kind of flair one rarely associates with goofy monster flicks like this. Followed by a direct-to-video sequel (Tremors: Aftershocks), this horror thriller was given the deluxe treatment for its DVD release. --Jeff Shannon
