Title number 004 in the 101 Films Black Label range. From internationally acclaimed director Paul Verhoeven (Soldier of Orange, Elle), Black Book (Zwartboek) is an epic and moving wartime tale, in which the distinctions between good and evil become blurred by human nature. Starring Carice van Houten (Valkyrie, Game of Thrones) and Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others, Bridge of Spies), the film chronicles one woman's fight for survival and revenge as the Second World War enters its final, bloody months. September 1944. Rachel Stein (van Houten), a Dutch-Jewish woman in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands, joins fellow refugees in their attempt to reach Allied territory by boat after her safehouse is destroyed by a bomb. The voyage ends in disaster when the escape is discovered by a Nazi patrol, with Rachel the sole survivor as her fellow refugees, including her own family, are ruthlessly killed. Set on revenge, Rachel joins the Resistance, adopting the identity of Ellis de Vries to mask her heritage, and infiltrating the German Security Service by seducing senior officer Müntze (Koch). As the war enters its final stages and the fight for survival intensifies, Rachel becomes entangled in a deadly web of deceit and betrayal. Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay of Moonstruck, by John Patrick Shanley (Joe Versus the Volcano), is a wonderful, gently satirical tale of an Italian-American family dealing with repression and dissatisfaction against a backdrop of cultural expectations. Cher is focused and funny as a widow who feels she should marry an older fellow (Danny Aiello), but then falls for his black-sheep brother (Nicolas Cage). Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia are perfect as her parents, and John Mahoney (of TV's Frasier) has a memorable, small role as a middle-aged man on the make who gets a lecture from Dukakis's character. Shanley's dialogue is comically stylised in a way that makes one appreciate how much words can inform an actor's performance. Taking its cues from him and director Norman Jewison (And Justice for All), the cast immerse themselves in a pool of hilariously operatic emotion. --Tom Keogh

Between 1956 and 1960, director Budd Boetticher, and star Randolph Scott made a series of remarkable, slyly subversive, studio-produced westerns that brought a new spark to the genre and became known as the ˜Ranown Cycle'. In The Tall T, co-starring Richard Boone, Maureen O'Sullivan and Henry Silva, Scott is a rancher kidnapped along with an heiress, and held for ransom by three murderous outlaws. A ruthlessly efficient western thriller, The Tall T established the success of the Scott/Boetticher team. He demonstrates new instruments both ancient and modern he sings an internet love song a lament about punk heroes Iranian hip-hop and plays a mean folk-bouzouki. Thomas the Doubter gets a new look and Darwin's curious obsessions and the myth of intelligent design are all worked over in Bailey's own surreal style. The most cherished film by CHARLIE CHAPLIN (Modern Times) is also his ultimate Little Tramp chronicle. The writer-director-star achieved new levels of grace, in both physical comedy and dramatic poignancy, with this silent tale of a lovable vagrant falling for a young blind woman who sells flowers on the street (a magical VIRGINIA CHERRILL) and mistakes him for a millionaire. Though this Depression-era smash was made after the advent of sound, Chaplin remained steadfast in his love for the expressive beauty of the pre-talkie form.
