  These four television films originally screened by Channel 4 in 1983 brought the emerging writing talent of former actor David Leland to national attention. He would subsequently win a BAFTA Award for his directorial debut Wish You Were Here and an Emmy Award for his contribution to Band of Brothers and work on screenplays for Mona Lisa and Personal Services. Featuring early roles for Tim Roth and Jim Broadbent the plays form a scathing portrait of British society in the early 1980s focusing in particular on the polarisation of attitudes towards the role and methods of education in an increasingly fragmented society. Without overtly offering solutions Leland s plays depict - often with unnerving acuity and foresight - the experience of individuals within systems that have become inadequate in dealing with the fallout of social breakdown. Of the four plays presented here Made in Britain directed by Alan Clarke (Scum) inevitably aroused the strongest controversy with Tim Roth s astonishing portrayal of a nihilistic racist teenage skinhead captured by Chris Menges innovative cinematography; the screenplay won Leland the Prix Italia in 1983. Birth Of A Nation: Featuring Jim Broadbent the play dramatises the conflict between old authoritarian teaching methods and the more relaxed approach of progressive educationalists. Flying Into The Wind: Graham Crowden stars in a play depicting the battle between parents who want to home-educate their children and the local education authority. R.H.I.N.O.: The harrowing story of Angela a disenfranchised young black girl living in 1980s London and her encounters with a well-meaning but often ineffectual social system. Made In Britain: Directed by Alan Clarke Tim Roth makes his TV debut as a hate-filled teenage skinhead on a self-destructive campaign destined to lead to permanent incarceration.

  Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opens with the stitched-together prehistoric family about to become a biological one: Manny (voiced by Ray Romano) and his mate Ellie (Queen Latifah) are expecting a baby mammoth. Unfortunately, this makes Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the sabre-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) feel left out. Diego, who worries he’s losing his edge, decides to head out on his own, while Sid adopts three suspiciously large eggs that he’s found through a crack in the ice. Up to this point, the movie is perilously sappy--does anyone, particularly a kid, want to watch a kid’s movie about parenthood and impending middle age? Fortunately, the eggs turn out to be dinosaur eggs from a pre-mammalian underworld, and when the mama T-Rex comes to rescue her rambunctious little ones, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs transforms into a delightful comic adventure. The emotional side of the Ice Age movies has always been a tad mawkish, so it’s smart that Dawn of the Dinosaurs emphasises physical comedy. Clearly, the animators have been inspired by a wild fusion of Road Runner cartoons and Buster Keaton. The character of Scratte, with his non-verbal, monomaniacal efforts to get that last acorn (doubled in this movie with the addition of a female counterpart), is only the most obvious reflection of this sensibility. The animators have great fun with the differences in scale between the mammals and the dinosaurs, and the introduction of a deranged Australian weasel named Buck (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead) pushes everything into Loony-Tune territory. This singular habitat combined with its isolated location has given rise to hundreds of varieties of flora and fauna found nowhere else but here. 'South Pacific' (2009) explores the vast South Pacific ocean and its many islands giving viewers the opportunity to see beyond the white sandy beaches and palm trees. Both the wildlife and the islander's way of life and rituals are examined showing how both cope with their remote environment. Highlights include spectacular sights of giant crabs that can open coconuts undersea volcanos and the use of super slow motion footage to capture the scale of some of the of the world's biggest waves. 'Nature's Great Events' (2009) chronicles some of the planet's most spectacular natural events and shows how these phenomena can transform entire landscapes drawing in millions of animals and determining their fate. The series also explains how powerful natural forces can trigger chain reactions involving everything from microscopic organisms to entire tracts of rainforest. Events featured in the series include the Pacific salmon run the greening of the Serengeti the plankton bloom in the Pacific Northwest the spring thaw in the Arctic the flooding of the Okavango Delta and the South Atlantic sardine run.

  I will be retiring from this programme in two weeks' time because of poor ratings. In 1976 two of the key players in the Golden Age of Television writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sidney Lumet delivered a coruscating attack - at once savage and hilarious - on the medium that made their names. Since this show is the only I had going for me in my life I've decided to kill myself. To speak Chayefsky's Oscar-winning dialogue Lumet enlisted a powerhouse cast list including Faye Dunaway William Holden Peter Finch (as 'the mad prophet of the airwaves' Howard Beale) Robert Duvall Ned Beatty and Beatrice Straight. Five of them would be nominated for Academy Awards three would win. I'm going to blow my brains out right on this programme a week from today. As well as its four Oscars Network was also garlanded with a quartet of Golden Globes a BAFTA and numerous other awards. In the years since its release its reputation has only grown: the Library of Congress granted it a place on their prestigious National Film Registry; the American Film Institute named it as one of the greatest American films of all time; and the Writers Guild of America declared it screenplay one of the ten best of all time. It remains a true classic. So tune in next Tuesday.   Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera", Blade II takes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyed Blade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer the über-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultra-violence, with the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain.
