A classic tale of self-discovery, romance, and adventure, Rio is the story of Blu, a flightless macaw who was taken from the forests of Rio de Janeiro as a young bird and raised by a kind girl in a small Minnesota town. When an ornithologist comes to town and informs Blu's now-grown owner Linda that Blu is the last male of his species, Blu and Linda return to Rio so that Blu can mate with a feisty female named Jewel. Thus begins an adventure in which Blu encounters everything from the complexities of courtship and love, to thugs involved in an exotic animal theft ring, strange new friendships--including one with an overly friendly slobbering bulldog--and a crazy ride through a carnival parade. Blu and Linda both mature as a result of their journey in Rio, and love ensures that life will never be quite the same for either ever again. The animation in Rio is quite impressive, the characters are endearing, the Brazilian music is very appealing, and the star-studded voice cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jesse Eisenberg, Will.i.am, Wanda Sykes, Jane Lynch, George Lopez and Jamie Foxx. While the story doesn't really offer anything new--instead playing much like a rehashing of some of the major plot points from movies like Madagascar, Finding Nemo and Babe--that doesn't mean the film isn't perfectly entertaining for both kids and adults. Simmering with supernatural elements this is THE ORIGINALS from The Vampire Diaries executive producer/writer Julie Plec. The first season of THE ORIGINALS brought the most formidable creature on earth the Original vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson back to his former home -- the vibrant and supernaturally charged city of New Orleans. When he arrived with his siblings Elijah and Rebekah not far behind he was stunned to learn that werewolf Hayley Marshall was pregnant with his child. Though Elijah hoped that the news of a baby might help rebuild their fractured family other forces threatened to destroy it further -- namely Marcel Gerard Klaus's beloved vampire protégé whom the Original siblings thought to be long dead along with a dark secret that Marcel and Rebekah held for a century. The Originals and Hayley soon found themselves caught in a bloody war between vampires and witches the stakes raised by a vengeful teenage witch Davina and by Klaus's surprising connection to Cami a student with a painful past. Meanwhile Hayley helped her exiled werewolf family return to the French Quarter unaware that a ruthless pack of wolves was already lurking in the city waiting to stage a violent coup on the vampires. As the first season came to a dramatic close the werewolves decimated the vampire community while the witches made a horrific assassination attempt against Klaus and Hayley's newborn daughter. Season two finds our heroes adjusting to a new status quo with the newly empowered werewolves controlling the city Klaus struggling to adjust to new weaknesses and Elijah desperate to save Hayley -- now a hybrid -- from a vicious spiral of self-destruction.

Farel fired, and Eugenie Joseph brought on board to shoot new scenes and reedit the existing footage. The chaotic and deranged result has gone on to amass an army of devotees in the intervening years, attaining genuine cult status among horror fans. Among the additional content is a new version of featurelength documentary VIPCO: The Untold Story. After taking shelter in a spooky old mansion, complete with a graveyard, they discover a ouija board and decide to spend the night attempting to summon some spirits. But the group soon learns that playing with the forces of black magic isn't fun and games, and it's not long before they're headtohead with all sorts of demonic creatures, shape shifters, and other forms of evil, all of whom are more than happy to pick them off in the most gruesome of ways.
L’Eclisse was the final film in Antonioni’s informal trilogy on contemporary malaise (following L’Avventura and La Notte), a series of films that redefined the concept of narrative cinema. Filmed in sumptuous black and white, and full of scenes of lush, strange beauty, it tells the story of Vittoria (the beautiful Monica Vitti - Red Desert - Antonioni’s partner at the time), a young woman who leaves her older lover (Francisco Rabal – Viridiana), then drifts into a relationship with a confident, ambitious young stockbroker (Alain Delon – Le Cercle Rouge). But this base narrative is the starting point for much, much more, including an analysis of the city as a place of estrangement and alienation and an implicit critique of colonialism. Using the architecture of Rome - old and new - as a backdrop for this doomed affair, Antonioni achieves the apotheosis of his style in this return to the theme that preoccupied him the most: the difficulty of forming true connections amidst the meaninglessness of the modern world. The final shot remains one of the greatest endings in cinema.

More ambitious in scope than any of its other animated films (before or to come), Disney's 1940 Fantasia was a dizzying, magical, and highly enjoyable marriage of classical music and animated images. Fantasia 2000 features some breathtaking animation and storytelling, and in a few spots soars to wonderful high points, but it still more often than not has the feel of walking in its predecessor's footsteps as opposed to creating its own path. A family of whales swimming and soaring to Respighi's The Pines of Rome is magical to watch, but ends all too soon; a forest sprite's dance of life, death, and rebirth to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring too clearly echoes the original Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain/Ave Maria sequence. But when it's on target, Fantasia 2000 is glorious enough to make you giddy. Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" is a perfect narrative set to Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2, and Donald Duck's guest appearance as the assistant to Noah (of ark fame) set to Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches is a welcome companion piece (though not an equal) to The Sorcerer's Apprentice, the one original Fantasia piece included here. The high point of Fantasia 2000, though, is a fantastic day-in-the-life sequence of 1930s New York City set to Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and animated in the style of cartoonist Al Hirschfeld; it's a perfect melding of music, story, and animation. Let's hope future Fantasias (reportedly in the works) take a cue from the best of this compilation. The music is provided by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by James Levine, interspersed with negligible intros by Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Itzhak Perlman, James Earl Jones, and others. --Mark Englehart
