An unsettling encounter between two strangers opens this epic road movie, one of cinema's most fascinating portraits of male friendship. A car races along a road, ending up in a shallow pond. Its distraught driver emerges, soaking wet. Robert (Hanns Zischler) is picked up by cinema projection engineer Bruno (Rüdiger Vogler). They initially travel together in order for Robert's clothes to dry out, but an unspoken bond is formed between the two and some friendly help transforms into something deeper. Wenders' film works on various levels. It is a visually striking portrait of Germany both its countryside, and the towns and cities the two men travel through. It is a rumination on the state of cinema, of a transformation from a classic era through to a modern, more divisive style. And it is a study of purely platonic friendship between two men. The ease Bruno and Robert quickly feel in each other's company is a rare sight in cinema. But Wenders asks of this relationship, like so many other elements in his film, how long can such a situation last before progress forces it to move forward or come to an end? With its unhurried pace yet moving swiftly through the three-hour running time Kings of the Road is now regarded as one of the essential European films of the 1970s and a one of the great German films of the last 50 years. It is also a key film in Wim Wenders' accomplished body of work.

  • Buster Keaton: 3 Films (Sherlock Jr., The General, Steamboat Bill, Jr.) [Masters of Cinema] Limited Edition Blu-ray Boxed SetBuster Keaton: 3 Films (Sherlock Jr., The General, Steamboat Bill, Jr.) | Blu Ray | (20/11/2017) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Eureka Entertainment to release BUSTER KEATON: 3 FILMS, a collection of essential films from one of the greats of cinema operating at the height of his powers, as part of The Masters of Cinema Series on Blu-ray from stunning new 4K restorations in a lavish limited edition (3000 copies) 3-disc hardbound boxed set on 16 October 2017. Between 1920 and 1929, Buster Keaton created a peerless run of feature films that established him as arguably the greatest actor-director in the history of the movies. Collected here are three key films from that era; Sherlock Jr., The General and Steamboat Bill, Jr. Together they represent a true master at his peak, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present all three films from stunning new 4K restorations available for the first time on Blu-ray anywhere in the world. Sherlock Jr. (1924) A film projectionist (and amateur detective) offers to solve the case of a missing watch, but is instead framed for the crime himself. Desperate to clear his name, the projectionist dreams of being the great Sherlock Jr., and in one of cinemas most iconic sequences, literally steps into the screen to bring his fantasies to life. The General (1926) When union spies steal his locomotive (along with his girlfriend), a plucky railway engineer pursues them doggedly across enemy lines. Containing one of the most memorable chase sequences in the history of filmmaking, The General is widely considered to be Keaton's masterpiece. Steamboat Bill, Jr. (1928) A steamboat captain receives a telegram informing him that his son who he has not seen for many years will be coming to visit. Eagerly expecting a strapping young lad who will help him compete with his arch-rival, he is disappointed with the effete progeny that instead shows up. Best remembered for its climactic cyclone sequence in which Keaton performs a number of death-defying stunts whilst an entire town is destroyed around him, Steamboat Bill, Jr. was Buster Keaton's last independent silent comedy and also one of his finest. Two lovers from very different walks of life collide in Model Shop, the first film by French New Wave luminary Jacques Demy (Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg) to be shot in the United States and a zeitgeist-capturing portrait of the late 1960s. Los Angeles architect George Matthews (Gary Lockwood, 2001: A Space Odyssey) is down on his luck. Unemployed, broke and facing imminent deployment to Vietnam, he suddenly and unexpectedly finds himself transfixed by the captivating Lola (Anouk Aimée, reprising her eponymous role from Demy s 1961 film), a pin-up who works in a low rent model shop specialising in erotic photographs. After spending his last $12 to photograph her, George realises they are kindred spirits, both adrift and without hope in the City of Angels, and, during a night of drinking and lovemaking at Lola s apartment, he forges a connection with the damaged woman that will have lasting consequences for them both... Dismissed as a minor entry in Demy s canon at the time of its original release, Model Shop later made Sight & Sound s list of hidden gems that had been unduly overlooked. Replete with Demy s sharp-eyed observations on the human condition and showcasing a masterfully realised sense of both time and place, Demy s American debut is a dreamy, devastating love story about a city and characters at a crossroads between the past and the future. • Mississippi Burning [Blu-ray]Mississippi Burning | Blu Ray | (14/09/2015) from £24.87   |  Saving you £-3.62 (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

A well-intentioned and largely successful civil rights-era thriller, Mississippi Burning uses the real-life 1964 disappearance of three civil rights workers as its inspiration. The film tells the story of two FBI men (Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe, entertainingly called "Hoover Boys" by the locals) who come in to try to solve the crime. Hackman is a former Mississippi small-town sheriff himself, while Dafoe is a by-the-numbers young hotshot. Yes, there is some tension between the two. The film has an interesting fatalism, as all the FBI's best efforts incite more and more violence which becomes disturbing--the film's message, perhaps inadvertently, seems to be that vigilantism is the only real way to get things done. The brilliant Frances McDormand, here early in her career, is not given enough to do but still does it well enough to have racked up an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. (Hackman also received a nomination for Best Actor and the film won an Academy Award for Cinematography). The storyline of Mississippi Burning is ultimately unsatisfying--it is after all the story of white men coming in to rescue poor blacks--but it is beautifully shot, very watchable, and features a terrific cast playing at the top of their games. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

The artist crucified by a society that once worshipped him? The lover imprisoned and freed, yet still running towards ruin in the final chapter of his life?
