Les Dawson's self-deprecating and enduringly bleak humour coupled with a world-weary delivery honed in the working men's clubs of northern England made him one of Britain's best-loved comedians. Sez Les was the TV show that firmly established Les Dawson's reputation running for over seven years and bringing his dour miserablist humour to a wider viewing public. Among the gems in this set are the advent of catastrophic 'superhero' Superflop some wonderful rambling monologues and the usual awful piano playing! This volume consists of the complete fifth and sixth series of one of the 1970s' favourite variety shows and include star turns from Sandie Shaw Roy Orbison Rod Hull Roy Barraclough (who - complete with headscarf and heaving bosom - would join Les as the other half of Cissie and Ada) Brian Glover Arthur English Aimi MacDonald and Stephen Lewis (Blakey from On the Buses).

Wendy Craig and Francis Matthews star as a bickering couple going through an acrimonious separation in this swinging, offbeat comedy from producer Bob Kellett and idiosyncratic writer/director Robert Fuest. Also starring John Wood, Dennis Price, Miriam Karlin, Peter Jones and Clive Dunn, Just Like a Woman is presented here as a brand-new High Definition restoration from original film elements in its original theatrical aspect ratio. Lewis and Scilla's rocky marriage finally breaks apart a situation made worse by the fact that Scilla is a key part of the television show that Lewis produces. But while Lewis copes by picking up a passing starlet, Scilla indulges her passion for bathrooms by getting one custom-designed by an ex-Nazi architect!

For the satirist, country music has always presented the slowest moving of targets; the genre wears its absurdities on its sleeve, has an appeal which baffles non-adherents and is generally most beloved by people who don't pay money to watch the clever mock things they believe are beneath them. On paper, then, Otis Lee Crenshaw--the creation of American comic Rich Hall--should be about as funny as the Barron Knights in ten-gallon hats. The reality is that Crenshaw, as evinced by this recording of a performance before a nigh hysterical London audience, is very funny indeed. This is because Hall's satire is grounded, one suspects, in an abiding love of country music and as such is laughing with the music and fans rather than at it; he holds an unmistakable depth of knowledge of its conventions and idioms. In a guttural drawl evocative of what John Hiatt might sound like with a broken jaw, Hall/Crenshaw delivers a series of impeccably observed pastiches, inspired improvisations and, most memorably, a triumphant deconstruction of "Jailhouse Rock". --Andrew Mueller

Originally sold with the provocative tagline 'Is 15 too young for a girl? Is one wife enough for one man?', this time-capsule of a film concerns itself with the story of a young married man who has an affair with a teenage girl, and forms part of a peculiarly 1960s British wave of films exploring such sensitive subject matter (others included Term of Trial, Age of Consent, and Three into Two Won't Go).Starring Olivia Hussey, in her first post-Romeo and Juliet role, and the inimitable Tom Bell (The L-Shaped Room, Prime Suspect), this wonderful slice of British cultural history is one of only a handful of feature films directed by Gerry O'Hara, better know for his assistant-director work with such cinema giants as Tony Richardson, Carol Reed and Otto Preminger.

The "sophmore jinx" hit hard for this second film by Kevin Smith, whose debut Clerks transcended the limits of its setting and budget to become memorably funny and a cult classic. (Smith followed Mallrats with the wonderful Chasing Amy, only to be cursed again with the appalling Dogma. Clearly he's settling into the same one-off rhythm that afflicts the Star Trek movies.) A ramshackle comedy set in a mall, Mallrats follows several storylines involving lovers, enemies, friends, goofballs, and Smith's own character "Silent Bob", who also appeared in all the other Smith films. A heavy self-consciousness weighs on everything, as if Smith forgot how to make obscenity funny instead of tedious. Still, it's nice to see some of the director's film family on screen, among them Ben Affleck before he was famous, Jason Lee and Joey Lauren Adams. --Sally Chatsworth
