Titles Comprise: Superbad: Two socially inept teenage boys are about to graduate high school. Evan (Michael Cera) is sweet smart and generally terrified. Seth (Jonah Hill) is foul mouthed volatile and all-consumed with the topic of human sexuality. Seth and Evan want nothing more than to lose their virginity before they head off to college. To do that though they need to get liquor for the big party that night. With the help of their friend Fogell a.k.a. McLovin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his fake I.D. the three of them go on a hilarious chase for that elusive booze dodging incompetent cops (Knocked Up's Seth Rogen and Saturday Night Live's Bill Hader) angry neighbors and jealous boyfriends! Not Another Teen Movie: The students of John Hughes High School live the plot lines of numerous teen flicks including: She's All That American Pie Ten Things I Hate About You and Sixteen Candles to name just a few. The most popular boy Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) has bet his friends that he can make Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) - the poor smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks - prom queen. Meanwhile her little brother is in pursuit of the most beautiful girl he's ever seen when he's not getting into trouble with his geeky friends. Of course a teen movie wouldn't be complete without a mean-spirited cheerleading captain a lovestruck best friend and a foreign exchange student all of whom have prominent roles in the film. Throw in a few guest appearances from familiar faces from some of the best-known teen movies of the 1980s along with remakes of songs from the same films - and even some word-for-word dialogue - and you have an amusing walk down memory lane for anyone who has a soft spot for the films of Hughes Crowe and the rest. Bring It On: In It To Win It: Southern California high school senior Carson arrives at the all-important Cheer Camp Nationals determined to lead her squad the West High Sharks to victory. But chic New Yorker Brooke and her team the East High Jets are equally steadfast in their pursuit of the competition's coveted Spirit Stick. As tension mounts between the two rival squads Carson falls for fellow cheerleader Penn not realizing he's a Jet. When Brooke discovers the budding romance she raises the stakes by challenging Carson to a one-on-one cheer-off. A spectacular cheer fighting sequence erupts into a no-holds-barred brawl and cheerleaders on both sides are suspended from the competition. With their dreams of taking home the top prize all but shattered the leaders of both squads realize they'll have to take drastic measures to stay in the game.
The second series of Happiness, Paul Whitehouse's rueful midlife crisis sitcom, sees the same cast of characters caught in the same rut but, in the great tradition of sitcom, never really going anywhere. Whitehouse's widower Danny Spencer is still making a tidy living doing the voiceover for a kiddie's animated Kung Fu Nurse Bear, still frustrated that while everyone loves the bear, no one either knows or cares who he is. There are some changes, though: Danny is less sympathetic, more bitter and prattish in this series; Clive Russell's ageing Lothario is still raving and squiring like a twentysomething, but gets a wake-up call; Fiona Allen's Rachel and pathetically, wonderfully whiney husband Mark Heap's marriage suffers a severe blip when the latter lapses hopelessly into an affair with Rachel's best friend Neela. Meanwhile, it's Johnny Vegas and Pearce Quigley as Sid and Charlie, who, having started off their own removals business ("We'll Do Anything!"), provide many of the series' biggest belly laughs, especially in their disposal of a cat they unfortunately run over. A match for the first series, the second year of Happiness is the same mix of ageing baby boomers grumbling over modern pop culture, convincingly inconsequential conversational banter and celebrity guest appearances, including Kathy Burke sportingly playing herself as an obnoxious old trout treating non-celebrities like underlings. On the DVD: Happiness, Series 2 has no extras on the DVD. --David Stubbs

The Book Group, the creation of writer-director Annie Griffin, is a superb, Glasgow-based comedy-drama. Annie Dudek stars as Claire, the prissy and neurotic American expatriate who initiates the titular group with a view to meeting high-minded types like herself. Instead, she gets Dirka, Fist and Janice, three Scottish footballers' wives, the wheelchair-bound Kenny, a leisure-centre worker with ambitions to be a writer despite his apparent inarticulacy, the stubbly-faced football-mad Rab and the insufferable Barney, a post-grad student and heroin addict at whom Claire makes one of the most embarrassingly disastrous passes in TV history in the opening episode. The Book Group is a magnificent device for bringing an unlikely cast of characters together, supposedly out of a love of literature but in fact because each of them in their own way has pretensions or ambitions to make something different out of their lives. Waves of sexual longing between the group members are among the many things that interfere with the discussions of the texts, with Kenny in particular an object of fascination for both Dirka and Fist. With each episode cleverly themed around the chosen book of the week, The Book Group is hilarious yet wise, understated and often painfully melancholic, based on detailed character study rather than contrived situations or eye-catching melodrama. It is indispensable viewing. On the DVD: The Book Group's main extra is a poorly edited but absorbing sequence of interviews with all of the cast members except James Lance, who plays Barney. Rory McGann (Kenny), who comes from a non-acting background, is particularly interesting. --David Stubbs
