  • A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies [1995]A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies | DVD | (05/06/2000) from £17.13   |  Saving you £4.62 (30.06%)   |  RRP £19.99

Scorsese's invigorating history of American movies avoids the straitjacket of chronology. Although he makes dutiful nods in the direction of Edwin S. Porter, D.W. Griffith and Orson Welles, he is equally interested in figures working at the margins, film-makers such as Andre De Toth, Ida Lupino, Sam Fuller and Edgar Ulmer, "who circumvented the system to get their vision onto the screen". He describes them as "illusionists", "smugglers", con artists who managed to hoodwink the money men into allowing them to make the films they wanted. Some worked in B-movies ("less money, more freedom") others (like Scorsese himself) struck their own Faustian bargains with the studios, making "one movie for them, one for yourself"His heroes are the outsiders, the film-makers who chafe against the assurances of the American dream. He offers a vivid, guilty vignette of himself as a four-year-old child, sitting in a darkened auditorium watching in amazement as Gregory Peck overpowers Jennifer Jones in Duel in the Sun, one of the first films his mother took him to. "The savage intensity of the music, the burning sun, the overt sexuality ... it seems that the two could only consummate their passion by killing each other". There's a certain irony in Scorsese, who once seriously considered becoming a priest, succumbing to a David O. Selznick Technicolor extravaganza which had already been condemned by the church. While often sounding like a serious-minded apprentice who watches old movies to pick up tips which will help him in his own work ("study the old masters, enrich your palette, expand the canvas-there's always so much more to learn") he never overlooks the illicit pleasure that cinema can bring. "I don't really see a conflict between the church and the movies, the sacred and the profane". --Geoffrey Macnab

  • Woodstock [1969]Woodstock | DVD | (09/09/1999) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock 'n' roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. The film deservedly won the Academy Award for Best Documentary, and it's still a stunning achievement. Abundant footage taken among the massive crowd ("half a million strong") expresses the human heart of the event, from skinny-dipping hippies to accidental overdoses, to unpredictable weather, mid-concert childbirth, and the thoughtful (or just plain rambling) reflections of the festive participants. Then, of course, there is the music--a non-stop parade of rock 'n' roll from the greatest performers of the period, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Canned Heat, The Who, Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Ten Years After, Sly & The Family Stone, Santana, and many more. Watching this ambitious film, as the saying goes, is the next best thing to being there--it's a time-travel journey to that once-in-a-lifetime event. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Season 1 of Vikings left many unresolved issues and cliffhangers - would Rollo really fight against his brother Ragnar? What will result from Ragnar's night of passion with Princess Aslaug? Can his marriage to Lagertha survive both his infidelity and the death of their daughter Gyda? In Season 2 these issues are resolved in dramatic and often unexpected ways. At its heart Vikings remains a family saga following the fortunes of Ragnar his extended family and the people he represents now that he is an earl. Ragnar's own desire to sail west to explore new kingdoms in alliance with King Horik leads to a storm-tossed landing on the coast of Wessex an important Saxon kingdom ruled by a king not unlike Ragnar. Season 2 is all about crises: of faith of power and of relationships. Kingdoms are at stake. Lives are at stake. Love is at stake. And all under the watchful eyes of the gods. Special Features: A Warrior Society: Rites of Passage (10-12 Minutes): The Vikings are such a fascinating topic for exploration because so much of the culture remains a mystery that our best historians continue to decipher today. Vikings Season 1 DVD/Blu-Ray delved deep into the rich history of Viking Culture and Justice and the Season 2 release follows this engaging historic exploration into the Vikings Rites of Passage. Topics for exploration include: Viking Birthing Rituals The practice of teaching the Viking Children an exploration of the ages at which milestones were achieved the significance of a young man receiving an armring and the practices underwent before a young man or shieldmaiden's first battle. Rites of Passage unravels more mysteries of Viking culture for the Home Entertainment audience. My Family My Enemy. Deconstructing The Climactic Battle (10-12 minutes): Season 2 of Vikings raises the stakes for the battles and the bloodshed of the series as the stunt coordinator and swordmaster surpassed the action choreography of the inaugural season. This behind the scenes exploration looks at the key battle sequences before intricately deconstructing every stage of preparation for the climactic Viking battle in season 2. From initial planning to storyboards to creating the choreography with swordmaster Richard Ryan to the actors choreography training under Ryan to catching the production day from behind the scenes... every aspect of the planning and execution of the key battle scene is explored by the creator director swordmaster cast and stunt coordinator.
