Written by acclaimed novelist Roddy Doyle and directed by Michael Winterbottom Family is a searing television drama that aired on BBC One and RT One in 1994. Family is a compelling characteristically no-frills look at life in an Irish suburb where Charlo Spencer's violent behaviour infidelities and criminal activities are pushing his wife and children to breaking point. The original transmission was a watershed moment in Irish TV history leading to an outcry and national debate about domestic violence. Family centres on the Spencers a family living in a Dublin housing project. Charlo played by Sen McGinley is the abusive and cheating husband of Paula played by Ger Ryan. They have four children: teenagers John Paul and Nicola and younger children Leanne and Jack. Told over four episodes each one devoted to a different family member this series gives an often harrowing picture of Irish working class life in the 1990s. The first episode focuses on Charlo; the abusive alcoholic father and husband who makes his living as a small-time crook. Episode two takes up the story of rebellious teenager John Paul just as he's starting secondary school. The third instalment tells the story from the perspective of Nicola who works in a clothing factory and has a particularly strained relationship with her father. In the fourth and final part we meet the emotionally and physically battered matriarch Paula who reclaims her identity by throwing Charlo out of the house and getting a job.

  • I Know Where I'm Going [1945]I Know Where I'm Going | DVD | (07/07/2003) from £9.98   |  Saving you £2.00 (25.03%)   |  RRP £9.99

Having seen I Know Where I'm Going, Martin Scorsese (a huge fan of filmmakers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger) declared that there were no more classics to be made in cinema. The film tells the story of Wendy Hiller's unromantic but determined young bride-to-be Joan Webster, setting forth to the Isle of Mull to marry an elderly millionaire. However, on reaching Kiloran she's prevented by adverse weather from reaching the island and must bunk down in a hotel with naval lieutenant and, it transpires, penniless Laird Torquil McNeil (Roger Livesey). It's not hard to predict the outcome of this saga but getting there is a wonderful journey. Hiller, more famous for playing less pretty elders in later life in the likes of Murder on the Orient Express, is splendid as the softening pragmatist, while Livesey, frequently used by Powell/Pressburger, again embodies a combination of British no-nonsense decency and romanticism. The strongest, most magical presence in the movie, even in black and white, is that of the Scottish scenery, beautiful and volatile and somehow serving to aid and abet the happy ending. --David Stubbs

  • One Fine Day [1997]One Fine Day | DVD | (17/04/2019) from £6.90   |  Saving you £7.35 (130.32%)   |  RRP £12.99

This gentle comedy almost seems like something out of Hollywood's Golden Age, a movie that might have been made by a talented contract director, perhaps featuring Don Ameche and Claudette Colbert. But in fact One Fine Day stars George Clooney as an investigative columnist for a New York newspaper and Michelle Pfeiffer as an architect. Both single parents, the two meet and bicker and develop a relationship over the course of a day while their young children play together. Michael Hoffman (Restoration) directs with a good sense of what's funny about harried caretakers and kids who do whatever they want to do. The story stretches out of shape a bit when Clooney's character has to rally to prove some point of corruption at City Hall; nobody involved seems quite up to making that subplot believable, but all that really matters about this very nice movie is the winning love story. --Tom Keogh
