This Call the Midwife box set features the complete series one two and three together with both Christmas specials. In series one Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) gets her first job at Nonnatus House which she soon realises is a nursing convent and not a hospital as she had assumed. As she begins caring for patients she gradually becomes accustomed to her new environment making friends with fellow midwives Cynthia (Bryony Hannah) Trixie (Helen George) and the clumsy Chummy (Miranda Hart). In series two it's 1958 and while Jenny has her hands full dealing with an abused patient Trixie and Sister Evangelina (Pam Ferris) are forced to board a Swedish cargo ship to tend to the captain's pregnant daughter. In the Christmas special the discovery of an abandoned baby on the convent's doorstep proves to be a catalyst as the community come together to try to trace the child's mother. Elsewhere Jenny finds herself drawn into the mystery surrounding elderly local woman Mrs Jenkins (Sheila Reid) while Chummy is determined to stage an unforgettable nativity play. Series three sees Chummy PC Noakes and baby Freddy back in the East End; Sister Bernadette - now known as Shelagh since leaving the convent - preparing for her wedding to Dr Turner; and Jenny facing some tough personal and professional challenges. At Christmas when an unexploded World War II bomb is found under a warehouse close to Nonnatus House the nuns and dozens of local families find themselves homeless. Later Dr Turner finds himself in a race against time to immunise children against polio and when a Royal visitor comes to the East End Chummy persuades them to open the new Community Centre. The fascinating portrayal of birth life death and a community on the brink of huge social change Call the Midwife continues to offer a gripping insight into a world that is so drastically different from how we live now.

One of a growing number of female-centred dramas, the first series of Cutting It was a sleeper hit for the BBC. Though its rival hairdresser premise seems fluffy, its classy gloss, off-beat scripting and strong cast make it as addictive as many of the outstanding TV series coming from the US. The drama unfolds when ambitious hairdresser Allie Henshall (Sarah Parish) wants to open a second salon. But her husband and business partner would prefer to start a family. Even when she puts in a bid for a property opposite her salon, Allie is beaten by rival hairdresser Mia Bevan (Amanda Holden). As a business war begins between Allie's Henshall Ferraday salon and Mia's Blade Runner, Allie has to overcome the reappearance of an old flame, Mia's husband, who is happy to rekindle his relationship with her. As the relationship histories among the characters become absurdly intertwined, it is to the cast's credit that the human dynamics of the story surpass its plot. Though there are certainly moments of parody (take Mia's yogic warm-ups with her staff each morning) and questionable twists, Cutting It gives its leading ladies some sharp and funny lines to work with and the space to do so. Both Parish and Holden run the gamut of emotions despite the seemingly clear-cut good woman / bitch divide between their characters initially. Their actions may strain the limits of credibility, but these women hold attention effortlessly. --Laura Bushell

Detective Inspector Kate 'Ash' Ashurst (Caroline Catz) and Detective Sergeant Emma 'Scribbs' Scribbins (Lisa Faulkner) share at least one thing in common: It's their job to pursue crime wherever it lurks - and it lurks in the leafy glades of the suburbs. In 'Witches' the body of a murdered teenager leads them into a girl's school and an unexpected world of witchcraft. In 'Estate Agent' a corpse surrounded by hate mail turns out to be a man more than semi-detached from his body. In 'Wedding' a party gets out of control when the father of the bride gives his daughter away and topples to his death in a carp pond. With a murdered Salsa dancer in 'Salsa' a deceased dog-watcher in 'Dogs' and a 50s singing sensation rendered senseless in 'Oldies' the dynamite duo face a constant struggle to keep the good life alive in suburbia.
