When he receives a cryptic call from his filmmaker friend to come to Lisbon to help with a project a sound engineer sets off for the Portuguese capital. Upon arrival the confused sound man finds only an unfinished film and the splendors of the city... In this commentary on the contemporary state of filmmaking the German iconoclast Wim Wenders reunites with long-time collaborator R''diger Vogler reprising the role of Philip Winter (following 'Alice in the Cities' and 'Until the End of the World').
The novel writter Dashiell Hammett is involved in the investigation of the mysterious disappearance of a beautiful chinese cabaret actress in San Francisco.
German drama written and directed by Wim Wenders. The film follows Bruno Winter (Rüdiger Vogler) as he travels around the country fixing projection equipment. One day on the road, he meets Robert Lander (Hanns Zischler) who, suffering from depression after splitting up with his wife, tries to kill himself by driving his car into the River Elbe. Bruno invites him into his car to dry off in some clean clothes and, after Robert accepts his kind invitation, the pair set off along the West German border as Bruno travels from one old cinema to the next, discussing their lives, thoughts and hopes as they go.
Wrong Move follows would-be writer Wilhelm (R''diger Vogler) as he leaves home and embarks on a journey that brings him face-to-face with several quirky characters - including a mute acrobat (Nastassja Kinski) and a struggling actress (Hanna Schygulla).
After being sent off for committing a foul during an away game, goalkeeper Josef Bloch (Arthur Brauss) wanders aimlessly through the unfamiliar town, spends the night with the box-office attendant of a movie theatre and commits a murder. But instead of turning himself in or fleeing, Bloch goes to his ex-girlfriend s place in the country and passively waits for the police to come and arrest him. As Wenders himself has stated, the visual idiom of Hitchcock s films provided the model for his debut film. He adheres minutely to the thoroughly cinematic source, a novella by Peter Handke. With his cameraman Robby Müller, and his editor Peter Przygodda - both of whom had already worked with him on his film thesis at the HFF (Munich University of Television and Film) - in THE GOALIE S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK Wenders set forth a collaboration that would weld this team together for years. An intimate portrait of designer Yohji Yamamoto. In 1989 Wim Wenders (Paris Texas Wings of Desire) was commissioned by the Centre Georges Pompidou to make a film about fashion and its place in contemporary society. Initially bemused by the offer the award-winning director chose to focus on someone whose work he was both familiar with and felt comfortable in the internationally renowned Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. 'Notebook On Cities And Clothes' gradually transforms from a meditation on our relationship with fashion to an exploration of visual representation creating a dialogue between the language of fashion and that of film. Both are rapidly changing forms of communication whose progressiveness is often breathtaking. As Yamamoto constantly searches for new modes of expression Wim Wenders embraces video technology which offers more flexibility when recording such a fast-paced world. Moving between Tokyo and Paris from the creation of one collection to its premiere at a fashion show 'Notebook On Cities And Clothes' is an intimate portrait of one of the world's most influential and visionary fashion designers and an engaging exploration of the visual medium.
In THE AMERICAN FRIEND, Wim Wenders transforms Patricia Highsmith s Ripley s Game into a gripping European noir. Professional frame maker Jonathan (Bruno Ganz) has been diagnosed with a terminal blood disease. A chance encounter with the enigmatic Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper) offers him a way to ensure a stable future for his family. But as Jonathan embarks on his new and dangerous role, Tom questions his motives for involving his new friend. Superbly shot by Robbie Müller, Wim Wenders draws on his love of American cinema, paying homage to the B-movie and film noir traditions and casting fellow directors Dennis Hopper, Sam Fuller, Nicholas Ray, Ge rard Blain, Peter Lilienthal, Daniel Schmid and Jean Eustache. The result is one of his finest films. A one time big Western movie star sets out to find the child he never knew he had.
NEW RESTORED 4K DIGITAL TRANSFER commissioned by the Wim Wenders Foundation and supervised by director Wim Wenders. One of the key films of the New German Cinema, ALICE IN THE CITIES marked the emergence of Wim Wenders as one of the most distinctive European filmmakers of the 1970s. The first in Wenders Road Movie Trilogy (followed by WRONG MOVE and KINGS OF THE ROAD) it is also widely accepted to be one of the director s most poignant films. Philip Winter, a journalist with writers block, becomes the guardian of eight year-old Alice (Yella Rottlander) when her mother leaves the girl with him briefly at an American airport, only never to return. Back in Germany, an unlikely friendship develops between the two as they embark on a journey to find Alice s grandmother. Through Rüdiger Vogler s portrayal of the embittered Winter, Wenders presents a stark but witty account of the changing face of Europe, the onset of global consumerism and the influences of American pop culture. A loose adaptation of a novelette by author Peter Handke, this early effort from director Wim Wenders follows penalized goalie as he makes his way through the city after missing penalty kick and getting suspended from a game.
Until The End of the World is an odyssey for the modern age. As with Homer's Odyssey the purpose of the journey is to restore sight -- a spiritual reconciliation between an obsessed father and a deserted son. Dr. Farber in trying to find a cure for his wife's blindness has created a device that allows the user to send images directly to the brain enabling the blind to see. The creation and operation of such a machine is in stark contrast to a deteriorating global situation where the continued existence of mankind is under threat from a nuclear powered satellite that is falling toward earth. Until The End of the World is a tale of love and hope -- a metaphor for the journey we must all take toward our future... the ultimate road movie. Features a stunning soundtrack from the likes of U2 Peter Gabriel Bian Eno Talking Heads REM and Neneh Cherry.
Five of iconic film director Wim Wenders' key documentaries collected together in Wenders Classics box set packaging with new bonus features and an exclusive limited edition collector's booklet. A must-have for Wenders fans. Nick's Film: Lightning Over Water: In 1979 award-winning German filmmaker Wim Wenders travelled to New York City to make a movie with legendary American auteur Nicholas Ray as he lay dying of terminal cancer. Surrounded by family and friends the director of such Hollywood classics as Rebel Without a Cause Johnny Guitar and They Live By Night reflects on a career of triumphs and compromises as he faces his final days with hope humour and the fierce independent spirit that defined his greatest works. Together Ray and Wenders create a film that is more than a documentary telling an extraordinarily moving story about collaboration that goes beyond friendship and ultimately a life in cinema that transcends death itself. Room 666: The year is 1982. Filmmakers across the globe converge on the south of France for the Cannes Film Festival the industry's most prestigious annual event. One by one they are led in to the cramped confines of Room 666 at the Hotel Martinez and forced to answer a difficult and engaging question: What is the future of cinema? The directors become the subject when some of the film's greatest visionaries bare their souls and wax romantic about the fate of moviemaking. Steven Spielberg Michelangelo Antonioni Werner Herzog and Jean-Luc Godard headline an all-star cast of auteurs in this eclectic documentary by acclaimed director Wim Wenders. Tokyo-Ga: Oscar-nominated director Wim Wenders turns his camera toward the Far East in this captivating love letter to the world's most bustling metropolis. Using the films of director Yasujiro Ozu as a window into the Tokyo landscape Wenders examines the sociology of Tokyo in both the past and present in an effort to understand the evolution of Japan's national identity. Highlighted by an interview with fellow filmmaker Werner Herzog Tokyo-Ga is a fascinating amalgam of personal experience and global introspection that aims to question the meaning of nostalgia in a city that thrives on change. Notebook On Cities And Clothes: In 1989 the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris asked director Wim Wenders to create a film about the world of fashion. Initially resistant to the idea Wenders soon became fascinated by the craft and philosophy of Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto as he prepared his new season's collection. From the streets and studios of Tokyo to the boulevards and catwalks of Paris Wenders uncovers the essence of Yamamoto's work while exploring the enigma of style the language of images and the very nature of human identity. The result is an extraordinary examination of both fashion and cinema as a way of life carried along only by unique vision and vivid curiosity. A Trick Of The Light: Long fascinated with the ever-changing culture of world cinema exploratory director Wim Wenders pays a visit to his alma mater in an effort to recreate the magic and wonder of film in its most infantile state.

This 3D film project about the soul of buildings allows six iconic and very different buildings to speak for themselves, examining human life from the unblinking perspective of a manmade structure. Six acclaimed filmmakers bring their own visual style and artistic approach to the project. Buildings, they show us, are material manifestations of human thought and action: the Berlin Philharmonic, an icon of modernity; the National Library of Russia, a kingdom of thoughts; Halden Prison, the world's most humane prison; the Salk Institute, an institute for breakthrough science; the Oslo Opera House, a futuristic symbiosis of art and life; and the Centre Pompidou, a modern culture machine. CATHEDRALS OF CULTURE explores how each of these landmarks reflects our culture and guards our collective memory.
A thriller that's nearly devoid of thrills? That's not a complaint--it's what makes The American Friend one of the most stylish (and at the time most expensive) films to emerge from the new German cinema of the 1970s. Loosely adapting Patricia Highsmith's mystery novel Ripley's Game, director Wim Wenders shifted priority from plotting to character, emphasising a richly colourful and atmospheric approach to locations in Hamburg, where a picture-framer (Bruno Ganz) is lured into an assassination scheme involving a mysterious Frenchman (Gerard Blain) and the titular American friend, Tom Ripley (played by Dennis Hopper, a far cry from either Matt Damon's portrayal of the same character in The Talented Mr Ripley or John Malkovich's in the 2003 version of Ripley's Game). The plotting is vague to the point of irrelevance; Wenders prefers to maintain the aura of mystery rather than generating any conventional suspense and expresses his affection for American movies by casting favourite directors Nicholas Ray and Samuel Fuller in pivotal supporting roles. The result is an intoxicating example of cinematic cross-pollination. --Jeff Shannon
