  • Amelie [2001]
    John Richardson

A stunning film, beautifully shot, very sweet and sincere, bound to put a smile on any face.

  • Amelie [2001]
    Joanne Featherstone

This is really different and unusual - not your average film. It's very enjoyable - funny, romantic, it's a chance to see life through a different perspective. It is French so there are subtitles but you soon don't notice. It is shot in vivid colours, reds and greens, so is a beauty to watch. Amelie is a loner, the oddball in society but the story follows her quest to do good for others and ultimately she finds her happiness herself.
    A real feel-good movie!

  • Amelie [2001]
    Stephen Springate

Amelie is a good hearted young woman, living a contented if plain existence in a neighbourhood full of characters as colourful as the technicolour Paris that is the backdrop of her life. Using all kinds of exciting camera techniques, the legendary french director paints a beautiful story of a young woman who is touched when she finds a box full of treasures from a boy who lived in her house in the fifties, and she decides to reunite him with his past belongings. After many trips through a slightly surreal Paris, a city the director is obviously passionate of, she finds the man and decides she will devote her life to helping other people, until one day she begins to start helping herself after seeing a touching video from one of her elderly friends. Although passed off by some as 'just another whimsy arthouse flick', it is easy to see how this arthouse flick became mainstream upon its release, it emancipates a glow of warmth that will enlighten ayone who sees it.

Amelie has craved love all her life, at the age of eight, her mother was the victim of a freak accident and her father was unable to give the attention she deserved. One day Amelie realises that the way to true happiness is to improve the lives of those around her... French dialogue with subtitles.

Audrey Tautou stars in this French drama directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. When Montmartre-dwelling Amelie Poulain (Tautou) discovers a hidden collection of childhood toys in her apartment and conspires to return them to their now-elderly owner, the happiness on the old man's face is enough to start her on a campaign of further good works. Thus she sends her father's gnome off on a tour of the world, begins a whispering campaign which helps her colleague Georgette find a boyfriend, and comes up with an imaginative way to stop a local grocer from being cruel to his employee. But even though Amelie brings happiness to her neighbours, she herself remains unlucky in love - that is, until she meets the handsome Nino (Mathieu Kassovitz).
