In ancient Gaul, Asterix (Christian Clavier), Obelix (Gerard Depardieu), and their fellow villagers manage to hold out against the invading Romans thanks to a secret potion which endows them with super-human strength. However, when a rogue fortune teller tricks the villagers into stealing a cache of Roman gold, Roman leader Detritus (Roberto Benigni) takes advantage of the confusion to lay his hands on the secret potion. Detritus plans to use his new powers to overthrow Caesar, and it is left to Asterix and his dim-witted sidekick to restore order.
