In this first part of two programmes we take a nostalgic look at the railways through the eyes of Albert Rowse who describes his early days working on the London Midland and Scottish Railway from 1941 onwards. He started shovelling ashes in the yard and graduated to driving Royal Scotts Britannias and Princesses on routes such as Settle and Carlisle the Cumbrian Coast the West Coast Main Line over Shap and Carnforth to Crewe.
