A bittersweet, emotional study of love in later life as Inge (Ursula Werner), a woman in her sixties and married for 30 years, decides to begin an affair. Although happily married to her devoted husband Werner (Horst Rehberg), Inge realises that their life together has become one of routine. A chance meeting with an older man, Karl (Horst Westphal), awakens long dormant passions, and the pair soon find themselves in the throes of a passionate affair. Unable to lie to her husband, Inge confesses, but is reluctant to bring the affair to an end. With Werner unwilling to play along, Inge is forced to choose between the man she has known all her life, and a new, uncertain future with her lover.
