World War II drama starring Gregory Peck in his debut role and ballerina Tamara Toumanova. In 1941, as the Nazis are advancing on Russia, Red Army officer Vladimir (Peck) is given orders to train the locals in his village and form a guerrilla army. As he becomes acquainted with the villagers, he grows close to refugee Nina (Toumanova) who is hiding out with them. They soon fall for each other but it is only a matter of time before the partisans have to put their country ahead of their own lives in a battle against the overpowering German Army.
