A lush retelling of the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Excalibur is a dark and engrossing tale. Director John Boorman (Deliverance) masterfully handles the tale of the mythical sword Excalibur, and its passing from the wizard Merlin to the future king of England. Arthur pulls the famed sword from a stone and is destined to be crowned king. As the king embarks on a passionate love affair with Guenevere, an illegitimate son, and Merlin's designs on power, threaten Arthur's reign. The film is visually stunning and unflinching in its scenes of... combat and black magic. Featuring an impressive supporting cast, including early work from the likes of Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne, Excalibur is an adaptation of the legend both faithful and bold. --Robert Lane [show more]

John Boorman directs this epic fantasy drama retelling the legend of King Arthur (Nigel Terry). Years after Merlin (Nicol Williamson) retrieves Excalibur, young Arthur pulls the mythical sword from the stone and is finally recognised as Uther Pendragon (Gabriel Byrne)'s son and the kingdom's rightful king. Years later, King Arthur builds his legendary castle at Camelot, forms the Round Table and marries the object of his affection, Guinevere (Cherie Lunghi), a relationship which Merlin foresees trouble in. Meanwhile, the wizard takes on Arthur's half-sister Morgana (Helen Mirren) as his apprentice and the knight Sir Lancelot (Nicholas Clay) confesses his love for Arthur's wife Guinevere, beginning a sequence of events which devastate the land. King Arthur tries to return his kingdom to its former glory and sends his knights on a quest to find the Holy Grail but faces opposition from Morgana and her powerful allies.
