Set in Munich in 1918, this film tells the story of an artist, Max Rothman (John Cusack), who lost an arm in the First World War and is now unable to paint. When he meets an eccentric young artist, also a war veteran, called Adolf Hitler (Noah Taylor), he is not entirely convinced by his artistic abilities, but nevertheless tries to persuade him that art is a better route to take in life than the public speaking that Hitler is increasingly drawn to. Hitler, lonely and broke, is envious of Max's wealthy, popular Jewish family, and begins to turn away from art in favour of politics...
