Continuing the adventures of Mary Ann (Laura Linney) in Seventies San Francisco, watched over by marijuana-growing landlady Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis). In the first three episodes, Mary Ann goes on a cruise with her best friend, Michael (Paul Hopkins), and finds romance with Burke (Colin Ferguson). Meanwhile, Brian (Whip Hubley) embarks on an affair with a mystery woman, whilst Mona (Nina Siemaszko) takes a trip to Reno and falls in with brothel-keeper Mother Mucca (Jackie Burroughs). In the final three episodes, Mrs Madrigal is forced to come clean about her past, while Michael resumes his affair with Dr John Fielding (Bill Campbell). Burke bumps into a strange man who may hold the key to his missing past, whilst Beauchamp Day (Thomas Gibson) plots to have his wife attacked.
