As his fragile newborn baby Emily remains in intensive care and with his wife Ellen (Katey Sagal) seriously ill Brian (Tom Irwin) is suddenly faced with the possibility of losing both of them. Emily's primary nurse Claire (Annabeth Gish) a young divorced mother with two girls of her own ends up taking care of the parents as well as the child. However Ellen continues to feel poorly until the heartbreaking moment when she is diagnosed as having an untreatable malignancy in her lungs and ribs.
