Classic Western starring William Holden as David Harvey, a widower who feels his son, Davey (Gary Gray), would benefit from having a mother figure. He finds and marries Rachel (Loretta Young), who is treated as a servant rather than a wife. A friend of the family, Jim Fairways (Robert Mitchum), visits and falls in love with Rachel. When David risks losing Rachel, he realises his true feelings for her.
