Alan Bennett and Peter Capaldi are among the stars of this British TV dramatisation of the furore surrounding the publication of diaries reportedly written by Adolf Hitler but quickly revealed as fakes. Gerd Heidemann (Jonathan Pryce), a journalist for the German magazine 'Stern', is the man convinced he has made one of the great discoveries of the day. His magazine duly pay a weighty fee to a mysterious figure known as Dr Fischer (Alexei Sayle) for the diaries, with established historians such as Hugh Trevor-Roper (Bennett) confirming their validity. However, Trevor-Roper, Heidemann and other high-profile media figures such as Rupert Murdoch (Barry Humphries) have egg on their faces when the truth emerges...
