Gerd Heidemann (Jonathan Pryce), a journalist for the German magazine 'Stern', is the man convinced he has made one of the great discoveries of the day. His magazine duly pay a weighty fee to a mysterious figure known as Dr Fischer (Alexei Sayle) for the diaries, with established historians such as Hugh Trevor-Roper (Bennett) confirming their validity.
