Ellen (Gina McKee) and Cora (Helena Bonham-Carter) are two best friends who help each other through the ups and downs of life. But when Ellen's husband Daniel (James Purefoy) seduces Cora, leaving her pregnant with his child, it might spell the end for the two women. Luckily however, Daniel's money troubles then cause him to leave town, and Cora decides to keep quiet about what happened between them; but this can't last for long, and when Daniel returns three years later...
