Classic western starring Gregory Peck. James 'Stretch' Dawson (Peck) is the leader of an outlaw gang of bank robbers who are forced to flee into the desert after being pursued by a vengeful posse. Close to death from a lack of water, the gang stumble across a ghost town, only to find that an old prospector and his beautiful daughter (Anne Baxter) are living there and working a local gold mine. The gang plan to rob the prospector, but are forced to reconsider their alliegances when Stretch falls in love with the daughter.
