Classic drama directed by William Wellman and starring James Stewart and Jane Wyman. Lawrence 'Rip' Smith (Stewart) is an ambitious pollster whose New York office closes down after losing a contract. When he is then shown a newspaper by a firm looking to hire him, he has a sudden realisation. In the newspaper he finds a small town whose citizens' opinions he believes accurately reflect those of America at large, and he recognises a chance to cash in. However, when a local newspaper editor named Mary Peterman (Wyman) latches onto his game, the subsequent clash threatens to destroy the town of Grandview and everything it stands for.
