This classic tale of grave robbers and murderers who sold the corpses for medical science was banned in its original title of Burke and Hare, which was of course a true story. The film is set in Edinburgh in the 1800's starring Tod Slaughter as William Hart; this dark and gory film tells the story of the infamous grave robbers. Burke was hanged and Hare avoided the gallows by testifying against Burke. This film is rarely seen and is graced with a fine cast. Alongside Tod Slaughter, top honours go to Henry Oscar (1891-1969) as Mr. Moore who equals Slaughter's treacly malevolence to such an extent that neither actor steals the scenes over the other. It is equally delightful to see a very young Aubrey Woods and also Tod's wife Jenny Lynn in the role of Helen Moore.

Milo Ventimiglia - TV Series Heroes TV Series Wolverine Rocky Ballboa) plays Paolo a screenwriter who has ensconced himself in a house far away from Hollywood in order to finish what seems like his last stab at writing a commercial screenplay. He's easily distracted though and after meeting the beautiful Djuna (Josephine de La Baume - Rush One Day ) during a night out he's inextricably infatuated. Djuna digs Paolo too but she's got a rare 'blood disorder' that doesn't allow her to venture our into sunlight. Scarily persistent Milo keeps courting her until she finally relents and agrees to hook up with him under one condition - she needs to be tied up so she can't bite him. Needless to say their lovemaking is somewhat acrobatic (despite the bondage) and she's presented with a fair shot at his neck which she takes. Djuna begins to school Paolo in the ways of the vampire. They try to drink only synthetic or harvested blood and kill only animals (killing humans is strictly forbidden). But that doesn't mean they live in a prudish culture. Paolo instantly takes a shine to the Euro-glitterati lifestyle that accompanies eternal life. Soon enough trouble comes in the form of Djuna's more carnal and violent sister Mimi (Roxane Mesquida). Mimi doesn't believe in the whole 'not killing people' thing. She's also not big on being tied down preferring her three-ways and one night stands anytime and anywhere she can get them.

House on Haunted Hill is one of the new breed of waste-no-time thrill machines, like Deep Blue Sea, and a particularly effective example at that. The plot is pure contrivance: For a party stunt, a wealthy amusement-park manufacturer (Geoffrey Rush) offers five people a million dollars if they spend the night in a former insane asylum where the patients murdered the sadistic staff. But it turns out the five people who arrive aren't the five he invited--did his wife (Famke Janssen), who hates him, make the switch? From there events unfold with a smart combination of human and supernatural machinations; spooky jolts are dispensed at regular, but not entirely predictable, intervals. The visual effects owe a considerable debt to Jacob's Ladder, a much more ambitious movie; House on Haunted Hill just wants to get under your skin, and succeeds more than you'd expect. Rush is his entertainingly hammy self; Janssen, Taye Diggs, Ali Larter and Bridgette Wilson are attractive and reasonably straight-faced about it all; and Chris Kattan is genuinely funny as the house's neurotic owner. Some elements of the plot seem to have been lost in the editing process, but it hardly matters. More bothersome is that the scares go flat when computer effects take over at the end--the digital images just aren't as creepy as the more suggestive stuff that came before. But that's just the very end; most of the movie has a lot of momentum. Watch until the end of the credits for a final bit of eeriness. --Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com
