The Last House on the Left is a vicious and efficient updating of the 1972 controversial graphic shocker of the same name, produced by its original director/producer pairing of Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham. When athletic teen Mari Collingwood (Sara Paxton) opts to hang out with her friend Paige in town rather than spend an evening in with her parents vacationing at the family's remote lake house, it marks the beginning of a night no one is going to forget. The two girls wind up in the company of escaped convict Krug (Garret Dillahunt) and his makeshift family of vile career criminals, who kidnap and brutally assault them before leaving them for dead. Fleeing from the scene of their violent crime during a storm, the thugs inadvertently seek refuge with Mari's parents, anxious as to why their daughter hasn't come home yet and primed to unleash the full forces of hell on anyone who would dare to touch so much as a hair on her head. Energetically directed by Dennis Iliadis from a new script by Carl Ellsworth (Red Eye, Disturbia), this remake of horror cinema's seminal tale of bloody revenge has been described by Stephen King as the best horror movie of the new century. 4K ULTRA HD SPECIAL EDITION CONTENTS ¢ 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible) of the original Theatrical Version of the film ¢ Original lossless stereo audio and DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround audio ¢ Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing ¢ Introduction by director Dennis Iliadis ¢ Audio commentary by David Flint and Adrian Smith ¢ A River of Blood, a 31-minute interview with Sara Paxton ¢ The Notorious Krug, a 27-minute interview with actor Garret Dillahunt ¢ Suspending Disbelief, an 18-minute interview with screenwriter Carl Ellsworth ¢ Reviving the Legend, a 33-minute interview with producer Jonathan Craven ¢ Look Inside Featurette, from the films original 2009 release ¢ Deleted scenes ¢ Theatrical trailer ¢ Image gallery ¢ Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Eric Adrian Lee

HOUSE OF WITCHCRAFT is part of a four-part movie series made for Italian television under the umbrella title House of Doom. Legendary Italian horror maestros Umberto Lenzi and Lucio Fulci each contributed two films for the series: Lenzi made HOUSE OF LOST SOULS and HOUSE OF WITCHCRAFT while Fulci offered HOUSE OF CLOCKS and SWEET HOUSE OF HORRORS. Lenzi's second contribution to the series centres on a young man with a recurring nightmare in which he is running away from a pursuer and reaches the shelter of an old house only to have an ugly old woman boil his head in a big kettle. Sensing his underlying stress and anxiety his girlfriend suggests he take a relaxing holiday and the two drive to an old estate that belongs to her family. The nightmarish chills become reality when the young man reaches the house and realizes it's the same one from his dream...Lenzi refrains from his usual gore and splatter style and instead delivers an almost old-fashioned story bathed in chilling atmosphere and classic Freudian fears of witchcraft and haunted houses.

  • Waxwork [1986]Waxwork | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

In Waxwork a waxwork museum appears overnight in an American small town and sinister showman David Warner invites a group of typical teens to a midnight party. However, as expected, the place is home to nasty secrets, and the blundering kids find themselves transported via the exhibits into the presence of "the 18 most evil men in history". What this means is that the film gets to trot out gory vignettes featuring such horror staples as Count Dracula (played inaptly with designer stubble and a Clint croak by ex-Tarzan Miles O'Keefe), the Marquis de Sade, an anonymous werewolf with floppy bunny ears (John Rhys-Davies in human form) and the Mummy. Nerdy hero Zach Galligan appeals to wheelchair-bound monster fighter Patrick MacNee for help. Waxwork is strictly a film buff's movie--with Warner and MacNee turning in knowingly camp performances, and references to everything from Crimes of Passion to Little Shop of Horrors cluttering up its very straggly story line. It's not without ragged charms, though the tone veers between comic and sick (the de Sade scene, although inexplicit, features some lurid dialogue) more or less at random. The effects are likewise variable, and in any case rather fudged by direction, which frequently fails to point up the gags properly. It winds up with a scrappy Blazing Saddles-style fight between the forces of Good and a whole pack of monsters, and the budget runs out before the climactic burning-down-the-waxworks scene. The episodic approach echoes the old Amicus omnibus horrors (Dr Terror's House of Horrors, The House that Dripped Blood etc.), and various cameos allow director Anthony Hickox to parody/emulate the styles of Hammer films, Night of the Living Dead and Roger Corman's Edgar Allan Poe adaptations. On the DVD: It's a nice-looking and sounding print, but fullscreen format. The only extras are filmographies taken from the IMDB and the trailer.--Kim Newman
