A triple bill of stylish 'Giallo' thrillers from Italian maestro Dario Argento: The Bird With The Crystal Plumage (1970) The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971) and Phenomena (1984). The Bird With The Crystal Plumage : An American writer (Tony Musante - Toma TV series) travelling in Rome is the only witness to an attempted murder by a sinister man in a raincoat and black leather gloves though he is powerless to do anything to stop him. With a feeling that something is not quite right about the scene he has witnessed and the police's inability to make any progress he launches his own personal investigation - and nearly loses his life in the process. While this modern day Jack-the-Ripper type is slithering through the dark byways of Rome slicing up pretty girls director Dario Argento is carving up the emotions of terrified viewers. Dark deeds are mixed with black comedy worthy of Hitchcock in a film of almost unbearable tension and nail-biting suspense. Cat O'Nine Tales: The second movie directed by Dario Argento. With the screenplay by Dardano Sachetti and score by Ennio Morricone Cat O'Nine Tails is a haunting and suspensful thriller in the classic giallo tradition. The story begins when a blind puzzle maker (Karl Malden) overhears a conversation shortly before a robbery is committed at a genetics institute. When he teams up with a journalist (Franciscus) intent on solving the crime they uncover a trail off murders linked to the institute. Can they discover the murderer's identity before it is too late? Phenomena: Young Jennifer Corvino (Jennifer Connelly) is sent to study at an exclusive boarding school in Switzerland. A psychopathic killer is at large and has already murdered one of the academy's students. Jennifer sleepwalks and has a strange empathic relationship with insects. One day she befriends local entomologist Dr. McGregor (Donald Pleasance) who has been helping the police in their murder investigation with his knowledge of insects. McGregor encourages her to use her gift to track down the killer bu this places her in mortal danger...

  • Devil's Nightmare [1972]Devil's Nightmare | DVD | (28/05/2004) from £17.53   |  Saving you £-4.54 (-34.90%)   |  RRP £12.99

Seven travellers stranded in the Italian countryside accept the hospitality of a kindly castle lord, but what horror awaits them: the family has a curse on it that dooms the eldest daughter of each generation to become an agent of the devil, and guess who's coming home. After a striking opening scene (involving a Nazi officer in 1944 overseeing the birth of his child, which turns out to be... an accursed daughter!), this horror tale drags along at a glacial pace until the visitors settle in enough to take a little time out for sex, which serves as an appetiser to sadistic murders. The guests, ostensibly representative of the Seven Deadly Sins, die in appropriately thematic twists at first, though after gluttony, greed and lust the point gets stretched. This low-budget example of horrotica has its entertaining moments, an appropriately lurid style (courtesy of Belgian director Jean Brismee), and even an appearance by former French matinee idol Jean Servais (Beauty and the Beast). Included are trailers for this and three other Italian exploitation films and an extended introduction by British horror hostess Eileen Daly (which was actually recorded for a different film!), a black-leather Elvira with a whip and a penchant for kink that may not be to the tastes of all audiences. --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

  • Sweet House of Horrors (Beyond Terror) [DVD] [1989]Sweet House of Horrors (Beyond Terror) | DVD | (07/12/2009) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £9.99

Fulci's second contribution to the series begins with a typically gory scene worthy of the director deemed the sultan of splatter. A masked man breaks into a couple's home and brutally murders them in an extremely sadistic fashion leaving their two children orphaned and haunted by the loss of their parents. After this violent prologue the film takes an unexpected turn into the realm of modern-day fairy tales as the grieving children conjure a supernatural force that brings their parents back to life. This tender yet desperate act results in disastrous consequences as the parents attempt to both comfort their children and exact revenge on their murderer. The Sweet House Of Horrors is a strange departure for Fulci who creates an unusual mix of genres ranging from his trademark horror to some unexpected moments of comedy.

HOUSE OF CLOCKS is part of a four-part movie series made for Italian television under the umbrella title House of Doom. Legendary Italian horror maestros Umberto Lenzi and Lucio Fulci each contributed two films for the series: Lenzi made HOUSE OF LOST SOULS and HOUSE OF WITCHCRAFT while Fulci offered HOUSE OF CLOCKS and SWEET HOUSE OF HORRORS. One of Fulci's more obscure movies his first contribution to the series centres on a group of young thugs intent on robbery who break into the home of a seemingly harmless couple with an antique clock collection. Though the elderly couple seem an easy target the young toughs find themselves entering deeper and deeper into a terrifying nightmare after they murder the couple whose clocks begin to turn back time for the thieves and exact a horrifying revenge on them. Playing out like a Lucio Fulci version of a TWILIGHT ZONE episode HOUSE OF CLOCKS is sure to please fans of the gore auteur who is recognized the world over as the sultan of splatter. Here he creates a surprisingly surrealist story with plenty of atmosphere and originality.
