| RRP One of Oshima's most powerful and controversial films. Telling the brutal story of real-life rapist and serial murderer Eisuke (Kei Sato) and his relationship with his protective schoolteacher wife Matsuko (Akiko Koyama) and his only surviving victim Shino (Saeda Kawagushi) Oshima takes the format of the 'real-life crime' drama and uses it as a canvas to lay bare the lost idealism and decay in postwar Japan. Although the action takes place in a seemingly idyllic rural setting Oshima's portrait of humanity is as dark violent and uncompromising as the urban wastes and hellish ghettos of Naked Youth and The Sun's Burial. Never presenting Eisuke as anything less than a monster Oshima goes further to suggest how such deviancy and (specifically male) violence reflects an amoral and corrupt modern society. Part thriller part reaction against the austere Japanese cinematic tradition with avant-garde experimentation and grim social commentary Violence At High Noon is fresh and as fearsome today as when it was first released.

Let's Get Lost | DVD | (28/07/2008)
from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Directed by internationally renowned photographer/filmmaker Bruce Weber the Oscar nominated Let's Get Lost offers an incredibly powerful insight into the life of the late jazz great Chet baker. Travelling with the exclusive icon Weber weaves together the life story of a man they called the James Dean of the jazz world charting his incredible rise to international fame and adulation and his tragically rapid demise into womanising and drug addiction. The film uses excerpts from rare performance footage and candid interviews with Baker musicians friends and battling ex wives in what turned out to be the last year of his life. His movie star looks and cool sound set Baker apart but his endless battle with a narcotic addiction also gave a generation of fans a Doomed Youth of their very own. Chet Baker's life plays out like a Kerouac creation as did his death (he fell out of an Amsterdam hotel window age 58) but out of life came some of the most lyrical trumpet playing and jazz vocals ever heard.

| Saving you £6.00 (42.89%)
| RRP For the first time ever on DVD from BFI Fellowship Awarded Terence Davies The Terence Davies Trilogy. The Terence Davies Trilogy acts as do his two later films Distant Voices Still Lives and The Long Day Closes as a reconstruction of his childhood and youth in working class post-war Liverpool. In his trilogy he uses alter ego Robert Tucker a shy and introverted child who is assumed to be not as able mentally as his peers and so bullied by those around him. His home life is darkly overshadowed by his violent abusive father and his guilt over homosexual feeling which is exacerbated by his strict Catholic upbringing. These dark and unhappy memories though are interspersed by his tender and warm feelings towards the entertainment culture springing up around Liverpool listening to the wireless and visiting the cinema being favourite pastimes of his. Davies sticks to his fragmented patchwork narrative to show the nature of his own personal memory interspersed with snatched songs and surreal daydreams and so the audience can emphasise with his every grin and grimace. With Liverpool's City Of Culture recognition The Terence Davies Trilogy becomes ever more important as its appreciation of the pop culture which came out of Liverpool is accredited with Robert's happiness and therefore Terence Davies' and his admission into cinema himself.

At first Lawrence agrees to help Freddy spruce up his stunts and his wardrobe. But when it becomes apparent that the Riviera isn't big enough for the both of them they make a winner-takes-all wager over the fortune of a nave American soap heiress (Glenne Headly): the first one to 'clean her out' can make the other clear out - and keep the Riviera and its unsuspecting tourists to himself! Three Amigos (Dir. John Landis) (1986): In the days of silent film serials one of the noblest trios to grace the screen and get the bad guys was the Three Amigos: Dusty Bottoms (Chevy Chase) Lucky Day (Steve Martin) and Ned Nederlander (Martin Short). But when their Hollywood glory days wane they receive a letter from a desperate community in Mexico that thinks their heroic characters are for real: they want the Three Amigos to come to their tiny Mexican village and defeat the notorious bandit El Guapo (Alfonso Arau).
