  • JFK [Blu-ray] [1992]JFK | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013) from £11.98   |  Saving you £-1.54 (N/A%)   |  RRP £8.45

Not a John F Kennedy biopic, but a film of New Orleans' attorney Jim Garrison's investigation into the President's assassination, JFK is that rarest of things, a modern Hollywood drama which credits the audience with serious intelligence and ultimately proves itself a great film. Oliver Stone's film has the archetypal story, visual scale and substance to match; not just a gripping real-life conspiracy thriller, but a fable for the fall of the American dream (a theme further explored by the director in Nixon and Any Given Sunday). JFK doesn't reveal exactly what happened in Dallas on 22 November 1963--those who knew generally took their secrets to the grave--but marshals a vast wealth of facts and plausible theories, trusting the audience to draw its own conclusions. Following less than a year after Dances With Wolves (1990), these two epics mark the high point of Kevin Costner's career and the vast supporting cast here, including Gary Oldman, Kevin Bacon, Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland, is superb. Quite simply the best American political film ever made. --Gary S Dalkin

  • Winter Witch [DVD]Winter Witch | DVD | (04/11/2013) from £18.75   |  Saving you £1.24 (6.61%)   |  RRP £19.99

Winter Witch is the stunning fantasy starring Bridget Fonda as the Winter Witch. What begins as a simple, bittersweet tale about a widower's daughter grandly unfolds into a rich, mythical adventure. Based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairy take this story whisks viewers to a remote mountain town where winter claims a surprising number of lives, beginning with the local innkeeper's wife. Many years later, the woman's daughter, Gerda (Chelsea Hobbs), finds true love when her father hires Kai (Jeremy Guilbaut) as the inn's new bellboy. The mood turns rather sinister as the Winter Witch (Bridget Fonda) bewitches and captures Kai. Scenes of Gerda's search through the lush temptations of each season personified are interspersed with downright creepy scenes of Kai held prisoner in the Snow Queen's ice palace. Stunning special effects, Keen acting and smart direction make this one of the standout fantasy films of 2012.

  • M*A*S*H [Blu-ray] [1970]M*A*S*H | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013) from £19.19   |  Saving you £-4.94 (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

MASH--a 1970 comedy-drama set among surgeons drafted into the Korean war--was a breakthrough not just for director Robert Altman but for movie-making in general. Although set in the 50s, there are few who did not realise that the film's anti-war messages were directed at the US involvement in Vietnam. Indeed, the Pentagon banned US servicemen from seeing the film. Starring Donald Sutherland as Hawkeye Pierce and Elliot Gould as Trapper John McIntyre, two hip young surgeons drafted against their will. Their general attitude--while never corroding either their humanity or their professionalism as surgeons--is one of insolence towards military authority and the arbitrary structures and regulations continually droning from the tannoy system. The film, too, thrives on a lack of attention to conventional order, with its cross-dialogue and random, episodic style reflecting the vivacious and unbuttoned feel of the content. However, MASH has dated and much of what seemed like "liberating" high jinks, today smacks of sexist, frathouse boorishness and harassment, especially at the expense of Major "Hotlips" Hoolihan (Sally Kellerman), while the episode in which "Painless" plans a suicide out of a fear of being gay reflects the persistence of homophobia even in 60s counterculture. Despite this MASH feels ahead of its time and certainly sharper and blacker than the too-cute sitcom it spawned. On the DVD: this is an excellent restoration, overseen by Altman himself, in which any obfuscation from the original have been cleaned up, especially the sound quality. As well as a commentary from Altman, there are three separate documentaries, featuring interviews with Altman, the cast and screenwriter Ring Lardner Jr, who had been blacklisted during the anti-Communist witch-hunt which swept through Hollywood in the 1950s. We learn he was initially appalled at how little of his script Altman actually used but was mollified by the Academy Award he received. Altman is candid about the making of the movie ("It wasn't released by Fox, it escaped from Fox"). There's an abundance of similarly rich, anecdotal material here. --David Stubbs

  • Broadchurch (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]Broadchurch (Special Edition) | Blu Ray | (04/11/2013) from £13.98   |  Saving you £13.00 (108.42%)   |  RRP £24.99

When ITV first started screening Broadchurch, ostenisbly a murder mystery from the mind of Chris Chibnall, it didn't really get an awful lot of attention. Sure, the strong cast, led by David Tennant and Olivia Colman, meant it got noticed. But detective whodunnits are hardly rare. However, as the weeks went by on original transmission, Broadchurch escalated, and by the end, large parts of the nation were gripped by one of the best mysteries to have screened in many, many years. No wonder a second series was swiftly announced. This first one introduces us to the apparently quiet town of Broadchurch in south England. There, an 11-year schoolboy has gone missing, as two detectives, who hardly get on, are forced to join together to get to the bottom of what's happened. But all is not what it seems in Broadchurch, and to say any more would spoil the undoubted fun in watching it all unfold. For this is premier quality drama. Tennant and Colman are excellent, but the ensemble cast bring a collection of excellent, believable performances too. It's the writing that lifts things, though, and you can't help but be gripped as the story unravels. As well as the excellent show itself, the disc release also features a look behind the scenes of Broadchurch, along with background material. But it's that main drama that's the undoubted attraction, and one that's aching to be rewatched once seen, if only to pick up all the clues you might just have missed... --Jon Foster
