  John (Jack Reynor) lives with his mother Jean (Toni Collette) in a social housing suburb and ekes out a meager living as a nocturnal taxi driver. John turns to the local social centre for help and the centre suggests a rehab clinic outside of the city that has a month-long programme, but the stay will cost eight thousand euros. Needing money fast, John offers his services to the criminal that supplies him with extra work, but is asked if he will move to the next level. After John agrees, the money comes through and Jean moves in to the rehab centre, momentarily content. But John has to complete a task that will change him and his family's lives forever.

  Franco Zeffirelli's stripped-down, two-hour version of Shakespeare's play stars Mel Gibson as a rather robust version of the ambivalent Danish prince. Gibson is much better in the part than many critics have admitted, his powers of clarity doing much to make this particular Hamlet more accessible than several other filmed versions. The supporting cast is outstanding, including Glenn Close as Gertrude, Alan Bates as Claudius, Ian Holm as Polonius, and Helena Bonham Carter as Ophelia. Zeffirelli's vigorous direction employs a lively camera style that nicely alters the viewer's preconceptions about the way Hamlet should look. --Tom Keogh
