With a reputation synonymous with law and order, Commissioner James Gordon is one of the crime world's greatest foes. Everyone knows the name. But what is known of Gordon's rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? And what did it take to navigate the layers of corruption that secretly ruled Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world's most iconic villains -- the larger-than-life personas who would become Catwoman, The Penguin, The Riddler, Two-Face and The Joker? GOTHAM is the origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer/writer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome), this one-hour drama follows one cop's rise through a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil and chronicles the genesis of one of the most popular super heroes of our time. Brave, earnest and eager to prove himself, the newly minted detective Gordon (Ben McKenzie) is partnered with the brash, but shrewd police legend Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), as the two stumble upon the city's highest- profile case ever: the murder of local billionaires Thomas and Martha Wayne. At the scene of the crime, Gordon meets the sole survivor: the Waynes hauntingly intense 12-year-old son, Bruce (David Mazouz), toward whom the young detective feels an inexplicable kinship. Moved by the boy's profound loss, Gordon vows to catch the killer. As he navigates the often-underhanded politics of Gotham's criminal justice system, Gordon encounters imposing gang boss Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), and many of the characters who will become some of DC Comics' most renowned, enduring villains, including a teenaged Selina Kyle/the future Catwoman (Camren Bicondova) and Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor). Although the crime drama follows Gordon's turbulent and singular rise through the Gotham City police department, it also focuses on the unlikely friendship Gordon forms with the young heir to the Wayne fortune, who is being raised by his unflappable butler, Alfred (Sean Pertwee) -- a friendship that will last them all of their lives and will play a crucial role in helping the young boy eventually become the crusader he's destined to be.
This is one of Jack Nicholson's most underrated performances and director Tony Richardson's most overlooked films. Nicholson is a member of the U.S. Border Patrol who moves with his materialistic wife (Valerie Perrine) to a small Texas town. There, his new colleagues try to pull him into the web of corruption that runs through the local department and he's tempted, because the illicit cash will help pay the bills that his charge-happy wife is running up. But his conscience gets the better of him when he gets involved in a case of a young Mexican woman whose baby is stolen to be sold for adoption. Nicholson simmers, stews, and eventually explodes. The superior cast includes Perrine, Harvey Keitel, and Warren Oates. --Marshall Fine

The Prentices are a middle-aged, middle-class couple who enjoy doing exactly what they want, pleasing no-one but themselves. No great lovers of children at the best of times, they're forced to abandon their dreams and accept the nightmare of parenting three ungrateful, fussy and stroppy kids, aged 13, 11 and 7! As the days turn into months, it begins to dawn on Maggie and Andrew that the three monsters and their multitude of pets are there to stay. Will the reluctant grandparents gracefully take on their family duties as next of kin? Next of Kin is a hugely heart-warming comedy directed by BAFTA winner Gareth Gwenlan (Only Fools and Horses / Yes, Prime Minister).

Hit the open road with the first four seasons of TV's most relentlessly exhilarating show. A film by Captain John Noel. The Official record of Mallory and Irvine's 1924 Expedition. The 1924 Everest expedition culminated in the deaths of two of the finest climbers of their generation George Mallory and Andrew Irvine and sparked an ongoing debate over whether or not they did indeed reach the summit. Filming in brutally harsh conditions with a specially adapted camera Captain John Noel captured images of breathtaking beauty and considerable historic significance. The film is also among the earliest filmed records of life in Tibet and features sequences at Phari Dzong (Pagri) Shekar Dzong (Xegar) and Rongbuk monastery. But what resonates so deeply is Noel's ability to frame the vulnerability isolation and courage of people persevering in one of the world's harshest landscapes. The restoration by the BFI National Archive has transformed the quality of the surviving elements of the film and reintroduced the original coloured tints and tones. Revealed by the restoration few images in cinema are as epic - or moving - as the final shots of a blood red sunset over the Himalayas. Features newly commissioned music score by Simon Fisher Turner.
