A former police detective and a school teacher, embark on a new life running a Guest House in an idyllic part of the Lake District. They have successfully established themselves in the community, launched the business and are embracing the future. Mark asks the couple if they will run their home not as a Guest House for holidaymakers, but instead as a Safe House for those whose lives are in danger. The couple agree and are soon taking in their first 'guests'; a family at risk, headed up by David and Ali. Pursuing them is Michael, a violent man with an unknown agenda. For Robert, protecting this family resurrects the fears and anxieties bound up in a terrifying night when as a police detective he was ambushed and shot in the line of duty, whilst protecting a star witness who was due to testify against her gangland husband. Robert was seriously injured and the witness assassinated. As a consequence of running the Safe House, Robert begins to question the events surrounding the shooting and uncovers a web of lies. Nothing is what it seems as soon it becomes apparent that it's not only those staying in the Safe House who have something to hide...
A biting comedy thriller that parodies every pillar of the British establishment from politics and the police to the Bank of England and the dear old BBC. In the Red is set in Spring 1998, a year into a New Labour Government, with the country feeling that nothing has, in fact, got better at all. When a serial killer targets a number of bank managers and financiers, the nation responds with a curious mixture of mild outrage and quiet admiration. George Cragge, a raddled BBC Radio crime reporter with a fondness for drink and a healthy contempt for BBC management, joins the murder hunt after he begins to receive mysterious telephone calls from the killer. Leading the murder hunt is his old ally, DCI Jefferson. An immaculately constructed whodunnit, and an irreverent, yet affectionate romp through the corridors of British power. Malcolm Bradbury (The History Man) adapted Mark Tavener's bestselling novel for the BBC. The acclaimed features an all-star cast including Warren Clarke, Alun Armstrong, Siobhan Redmond, Rik Mayall, Keith Barron, John Bird, Stephen Fry and Richard Griffiths. This DVD celebrates the musical quest of one of the great symphonists of the twentieth century; Jean Sibelius, as seen through his music, his letters and the words of his wife Aino, who was with him for more than sixty four years. His quest was not an easy one. Living through the great turning point in Western music, many of his concerns were strikingly similar to those of Schoenberg and Stravinsky but each chose a different path. Sibelius once said that while his colleagues were serving multicoloured cocktails, he offered only pure spring water. The metaphor is a good one but, as so often with artists who take an untrod path, critical opinion has fluctuated wildly. In 1935 Sibelius was voted the most popular composer of all time by the members of The New York Philharmonic Society, a view that was echoed by many of the leading critics and composers in England.By the 1950s critical opinion had relegated Sibelius to a position of minor importance.Views are changing again and the time seems right for an intimate look at what Sibelius himself felt that he was trying to achieve. The two films on this DVD are an attempt to do just that.
