20 000 days on earth is a bold and unique look at one of music’s most mysterious and charismatic figures the iconic musician and writer Nick Cave. Directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard present a vision of an artist in a way that is unconventional yet undeniably intimate while also exploring more universal themes of creativity and how we choose to spend our time on the Earth. The film presents Cave’s personal analysis of his own life and creative processes. He shares humorous tales of times past with bandmate and frequent collaborator Warren Ellis and engages in enlightening discussion with those who have affected his life both professionally and personally including former Bad Seed Blixa Bargeld actor friend Ray Winstone and perhaps most notably Kylie Minogue with whom Cave collaborated on his breakout hit Where the Wild Roses Grow.

Ypres-The Immortal Salient Part 1 | DVD | (21/04/2011)
from £11.45 | Saving you £3.54 (23.60%) | RRP
This film is presented by historian and film-maker Ed Skelding who takes us on a chronological journey through the first two years of fighting in the salient. He is joined by renowned military historian and author Nigel Cave who will join Ed at some key locations where decisive actions took place. Nigel is well known for his contributions to the Battleground Europe series of guide books published by Pen & Sword. This film will feature locations associated with the first two battles of Ypres, including Hooge Chateau, Langemark and Gheluvelt where the first encounters between the opposing armies took place. The story of the 1914 Christmas truce will be explained by Nigel and the nearby locations where the artist Bruce Bairnsfather drew the cartoons that were to establish the character of Old Bill. Nigel is also interviewed at the notorious location of Hill 60, where he reads from his Battleground Europe book, and explains why this was such a dreaded place, even for the Salient. The second part of this film then switches to the Second Battle of Ypres in April 1915. This became notorious for the first real gas attack of the war and was to change the attitude of the British soldiers towards the Germans. Gone forever was any notion of chivalry. Nigel is interviewed at Vancouver Corner - where an impressive memorial to the Canadians who died defending the line despite suffering many casualties from the gas – now stands. He also takes us to the nearby Totemuhle or Death Windmill to explain where the gas attack came from and the resulting lost opportunity for the Germans. This film will also tell the story of the Royal Army Medical Corps and the doctors who did so much often in the most desperate circumstances. Nigel is interviewed at Essex Farm, forever to be associated and immortalized by the poem of the Canadian Colonel John McCrae – In Flanders Fields.

BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION LIVE OVER EUROPE | DVD | (24/10/2011)
from £7.55 | Saving you £12.44 (62.20%) | RRP
Black Country Communion, the English-American rock group featuring the talents of bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Trapeze,), blues rock guitarist/vocalist Joe Bonamassa, drummer Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin), and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (Dream Theater), will release their much-anticipated concert DVD and Blu Ray Live Over Europe on October 24, 2011. The performances were filmed with 14 HD cameras during the summer of 2011 in the German cities of Hamburg, Munich and Berlin. Producer Kevin Shirley explains, we saw that this live act could be an awesome force of nature to behold; that promised legendary performances like those of our heroes of Classic Rock (and I have seen some of my all time favourite performances at a Black Country Communion gig because they are that good). The plan was to get them out there, for the world to hear. Records allow a certain musical finesse, but live performance promises so much in the very transient nature of a gig - chances are taken, boundaries are crossed - and the most exciting performances explode. Two studio albums would build a repertoire big enough for a full concert and then we could unleash the monster for all the world to see and feel... so here it is! Disc 1:1. Mistaken for Strangers | DVD | (14/07/2014)
from £6.39 | Saving you £9.60 (60.00%) | RRP
In 2010 the rock band The National released their fifth album High Violet. After ten years as critical darlings the band was finally enjoying wider recognition. As they were about to embark on the biggest tour of their career lead singer Matt Berninger invited his younger brother Tom to be a part of their tour crew. A budding filmmaker and horror movie enthusiast Tom brought along his camera to film the experience. Mistaken For Strangers follows the story of two brothers at very different moments in their lives. Approaching forty Matt is just now beginning to experience life as a rock star. Before he is invited on tour Tom age 30 is still living at home in Cincinnati. On tour Tom struggles to keep up with his crew duties. He watches his older brother perform sold-out shows for screaming fans and feels increasingly cut off from him. He doesn't always understand the band's success (he prefers heavy metal). He falls into bad habits loses track of the film he is trying to make and Matt starts to come down on him. Eventually Tom gets fired. After tour Tom moves in with Matt and his wife Carin who put him up until he finishes the film. This proves difficult; Tom shot over 200 hours of footage. He's scattered overwhelmed and feeling lost. The film Tom finally produces is a hilarious and touching look at two very different brothers and an odd but strangely moving portrait of a popular nuanced band. Special Features: Deleted Scenes Extra performances from The National

Bowling For Columbine | DVD | (01/05/2013)
from £2.63 | Saving you £17.36 (86.80%) | RRP
An Oscar-winning documentary based around a 1999 massacre at an American High School in Colorado, Bowling for Columbine is filmmaker Michael Moore's take on the culture of firearms violence that is, apparently, peculiar to the USA. Significantly, this is no detective investigation into the psychology and motives of the two students who randomly opened fire on their classmates, killing 12 of them--Moore regards such particulars as practically irrelevant--rather, it's an attempt to counter the moral panic and right-wing diagnoses that followed the massacre, with the likes of rock star Marilyn Manson blamed by some. Using a mixture of roving interviews, statistics, historical documentary footage, cartoon animation and the set-ups familiar to fans of his TV Nation series, Moore teases out appalling truths about gun proliferation in America. He's able to obtain a rifle by opening a bank account and shows that the bullets used in the Columbine massacre were still available at KMart--until he confronts their management with victims of the shootings. But it's not just gun proliferation that's the problem. Canada, Moore discovers, is similarly rife with firearms yet has a far lower murder rate. The problem with the US, Moore believes, is an irrational climate of fear that has driven the country to reactionary extremes since the days of the pioneers, persuading citizens that they need to be armed to the teeth. In a film short on lowlights, the highlight is Moore's confrontation with NRA President Charlton Heston. Moore's deceptively genial, shambling, regular American dude appearance (as well as his NRA membership) wins Heston's confidence and Moore teases from the actor an inadvertently racist slip of the tongue, before turning up the heat, at which point Heston terminates the interview. In this moment, the sort of anger Moore demonstrated at the 2003 Academy Awards ceremony surfaces briefly as he brandishes a picture of a gunshot victim to the retreating Heston. Funny, shrewd, righteous, hard to deny, Bowling for Columbine is uncomfortable and irresistible filmmaking. --David Stubbs
