  • Shane [Masters of Cinema] (Single-Disc Standard Edition Blu-ray) [1953]Shane | Blu Ray | (06/06/2016) from £11.49   |  Saving you £4.50 (39.16%)   |  RRP £15.99

Consciously crafted by director George Stevens as a piece of American myth making, Shane is on nearly everyone's shortlist of great movie Westerns. A buckskin knight, Shane (Alan Ladd) rides into the middle of a range war between farmers and cattlemen, quickly siding with the "sod-busters". While helping a kindly farmer (Van Heflin), Shane falls platonically in love with the man's wife (Jean Arthur, in the last screen performance of a marvellous career). Though the showdowns are exciting, and the story simple but involving, what most people will remember about this movie is the friendship between the stoical Shane and the young son of the farmers. The kid is played by Brandon De Wilde, an amazing child performer; his parting scene with Shane is guaranteed to draw tears from even the most stony-hearted moviegoer. And speaking of stony hearts, Jack Palance made a sensational impression as the evil gunslinger sent to clean house--he has fewer lines of dialogue than he has lines in his magnificently craggy face, but he makes them count. The photography, highlighting the landscape near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, won an Oscar. --Robert Horton

Eureka Entertainment to release Otto Preminger's LAURA, a psychologically complex and well-crafted murder mystery, on Blu-ray from 14 January 2019. The only question about Laura is whether it's simply one of the greatest film noir releases ever made, or if it's indeed the quintessential film noir. Decide for yourself. This 1944 murder mystery classic from director Otto Preminger (replacing a fired Rouben Mamoulian) has only grown in stature over the years, with its hypnotic mixture of doomed romantic obsession, dizzying intrigue, and fatalistic cynicism marking it as essential noir. Police detective Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews) is drawn into Manhattan high society as he investigates the death of stunning ad exec Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney), apparently shotgunned in her own apartment. The slithery suspects are numerous, led by effete, snobbish columnist Waldo Lydecker (Clifton Webb), and Laura's philandering fiancé Shelby (Vincent Price), who's also been cavorting with Laura's wealthy aunt (Judith Anderson). McPherson begins to fall in love with Laura through a portrait in her home and the memories relayed by those who knew her just as it becomes apparent that even the basic facts of the case might not be what they seemed. Peppered with eternally quotable dialogue ( I should be sincerely sorry to see my neighbours' children devoured by wolves. ) and sumptuous, Oscar-winning cinematography by Joseph LaShelle, Laura stands with The Big Sleep and Double Indemnity as one of the classic noir titles, and an undeniable American masterpiece. Decision At Dunkirk: In May 1940 the British army in France were facing annihilation at the hand of the powerful German army. Yet with a resounding victory within sight Adolf Hitler went against the advice of his tank commanders and ordered them to halt their assault; enabling the British to make a dramatic escape at Dunkirk. Why did Hitler do this? Did he as some suggest actually want the British to escape? The Phantom Invasion: By June 1944 Hitler was convinced that the Allied invasion of Europe would be launched against Pas De Calais. Hitler therefore ensured that this area was fortified to the maximum putting at risk other areas on the French coast. Even as the Allies began to land at Normandy HItler was so convinced that an attack would come at Pas De Calais that he refused to move any forces to his most vunerable positions. Why was Hitler so convinced that the Allies would target Pas De Calais? Was it because the Allies had a secret plan for a subsequent attack in that area?
