Unsolved Mysteries Of The Second World War - The Secret War / The Death Of Geli Raubal / Drugs And The Fuhrer | DVD | (18/04/2005)
from £14.83
| Saving you £-4.84 (N/A%)
| RRP The Secret War: Throughout most of WWII the British were intercepting and decoding German signals traffic. The information they attained proved invaluable in providing advanced warning of some of the war's most crucial attacks. These achievements were regarded as so important that an impenetrable veil of secrecy surrounded them for more than thirty years after the war had ended. Why did the Germans never suspect that their codes had been broken? How did the British disguise the source of the information? Just how vital was this secret to the outcome of the war? The Death Of Geli Raubal: On the night of 17th of September 1931 Angela Raubal Adolf Hitler's niece was found dead in her apartment. She had been shot and by the bedside was Hitler's own gun. Angela 'Geli' Raubal was widely believed to have been Hitler's mistress. Was her death suicide like the Nazi party claimed at the time or did Hitler himself murder his niece in a fit of jealous rage? Drugs And The Fuhrer: Under the influence of his personal doctor Professor Morell Adolf Hitler's mental and physical state dramatically deteriorated. Recent evidence raises questions over Hitler's increasing reliance on drugs prescribed by Morell. Was Hitler a dying man who held the fate of Europe in his hands? Was his mental instability and worsening judgement the result of his faith in the bizarre remedies of a quack physician?

| RRP A carefully crafted open-to-everything mixture of live-wire reality and controlled narrative Medium Cool is the debut fiction feature of Haskell Wexler who had already established himself as one of Hollywood’s premiere cinematographers in the post-studio-system-era on such films as Elia Kazan’s America America and Mike Nichols’ Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. In 1968 he hurled himself into the tear-gas of the cultural-political moment. The result was alongside Bonnie and Clyde and Easy Rider a seminal early work of what came to be known as “the New Hollywood”. John (the prolific Robert Forster who would find latter-day fame in Jackie Brown Mulholland Drive and Breaking Bad) plays a television cameraman who has become disenchanted as a creative subservient to the mainstream. Eileen (Verna Bloom latterly of High Plains Drifter and After Hours) depicts a newly relocated war-widow swept up in the maelstrom of the conflicts of the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago — the actual events of which serve as the spontaneous backdrop for Wexler’s picture. Documentary and narrative blur in the upheaval and chaos and perhaps only Peter Watkins’ Punishment Park stands analogous as such a powerful statement on the politics media and cinema of the late-‘60s — and the present. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray and DVD. Special Features Including: Gorgeous 1080p presentation of the film on Blu-ray from the 4K digital film transfer approved by director Haskell Wexler Original trailer Booklet featuring new and archival writings and imagery

| RRP Federico Fellini followed up his iconic breakthrough La strada with this brilliant drama - an unsparing look at the dog-eat-dog values of post war Italian society that nonetheless manages to navigate expertly between the lightly comic and the emotionally stark to become one of his richest most moving works. Il bidone [The Swindle] follows three small-time conmen - the ageing Augusto (Broderick Crawford) Picasso (Richard Basehart) and Roberto (Franco Fabrizi) - as they prey upon the poor and gullible for modest gains. However once Augusto is unexpectedly reunited with his daughter now struggling with her studies the moral and emotional demands of his lifestyle begin to take their toll sooner than he had anticipated. With its masterful set pieces and host of superb performances (including the director's wife and muse Giuletta Masina) this forms the centrepiece of what has been termed Fellini's Trilogy of Loneliness (with bookending films La strada and Le notti di Cabiria) and may be the darkest examination of human nature he ever attempted. | RRP Eureka Entertainment to release SALVADOR, a powerful, vivid and uninhibited political drama from Oliver Stone, making its UK debut on Blu-ray as part of The Masters of Cinema Series in a special Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition on 17 September 2018. A harrowing drama set during the Salvadoran Civil War, Salvador is a one of director Oliver Stone's most underrated films, a thrilling and violent look at the chaos of war as seen through the lens of an amoral photojournalist. In 1980, young men, women and children are being brutally killed in a bloody civil war in El Salvador. A horrific setting, but a perfect one for Richard Boyle (James Woods in an Oscar® nominated role), a sleazy journalist whose career needs a jumpstart. Armed with his camera, Boyle joins the front lines in an attempt to capture atrocious-but-valuable images of pain and horror. But with each picture he takes, he catches a tragic side of humanity that ignites his long-buried compassion. And he unexpectedly discovers something that will change him forever: his soul. Also starring Jim Belushi (Thief, Twin Peaks: The Return) and John Savage (The Deer Hunter, The Thin Red Line), Salvador is a searing critique of the United States' role in the Central American crisis, and The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film in its UK debut on Blu-ray in a special Dual Format edition.

Available as part of The Masters of Cinema Series from 13 June 2022. from £11.85
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP Eureka Entertainment to release THE WHITE REINDEER, a beautiful and haunting folk tale based on Lapland mythology, for the very first time in the UK as part of The Masters of Cinema Series in a definitive Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition on 8 April 2019, presented with a Limited Edition slipcase [2000 copies only]. The directorial debut of Finnish cinematographer Erik Blomberg, The White Reindeer is one of world cinema's criminally under-seen masterpieces. A vampiric fairy-tale set amongst the starkly beautiful fells of Finnish Lapland, Blomberg combines an almost documentary filming style with avant-garde experimentation to produce a dreamy art-house horror film without compare. A newly-married young woman, Pirita (Mirjami Kuosmanen), becomes frustrated and lonely as her husband, a reindeer herder for a small Arctic village, spends much of his time away from home in devotion to his work. Desperate for affection, she visits a shaman who offers a potion that makes her an irresistible object of desire, but there is a terrible cost. Pirita becomes a bloodthirsty shapeshifter who lures men out into the barren wilderness where she consumes them. With its portrayals of gender inequality, societal pressures and sexual anxiety (represented through animal transformation, echoes of Jacques Tourneur's Cat People ), The White Reindeer is a timeless classic that deserves to be rediscovered and recognised as a defining film in the horror and fantasy genres. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film from a new 4K restoration for the first time ever in the UK.
