This is the 1996 MTV New York show, which proved there and then that Alice's unique brand of dark existentialist metal (talk about being number one in a field of one) never needed wattage to convey that brooding intensity. There are plenty of classics here, including "Nutshell" and "No Excuses", although you won't get any of the earliest stuff and it's a pretty short set overall. While it would be fair to say that this disc could have offered a little more substance, no fan will want to be without it, and experiencing Layne Staley's menacing lisp in the stark environment of an acoustic set somehow returns the whole genre to its roots in the blues. Gnarly. On the DVD: The extra features include a chronology which fearlessly (and with plenty of self-deprecating humour) lists the band's long history of near misses as well as their successes. Also included are some wonderful anecdotes, such as the famous occasion when guitarist Jerry Cantrell missed a gig because he forgot how many days there were in November. There's also a discography and three extra tracks which didn't feature in MTV's original broadcast. --Roger Thomas

One of the key films of the New German Cinema Alice In The Cities marked the emergence of Wim Wenders as one of the most distinctive European filmmakers of the 1970s. It is also widely accepted to be one of the director's most poignant films and the first to be shot partly in the United States. Philip Winter a journalist with writer's block becomes the guardian of eight year-old Alice (Yella Rottlander) when her mother leaves the girl with him briefly at an American airport only never to return. Back in Germany an unlikely friendship develops between the two as they embark on a journey to find Alice's grandmother. Through Rudiger Vogler's portrayal of the embittered Winter Wenders presents a stark but witty account of the changing face of Europe the onset of global consumerism and the influences of American pop culture.

Be careful what you wish for!Ryohei Arisu is bored with life. Nothing is new or exciting, and playing games is the only relief from the endless monotony of a seemingly pointless existence. If only, he wishes, he could be someplace else a different world where things were more exciting. Then Ryohei and his friends, Daikichi and Chota, see what seems to be an incredibly powerful firework in the sky, brighter than any shooting star, and when they can see again, they discover that they're in an entirely new reality.Unfortunately, as they quickly learn, while this new world is, indeed, far more exciting, it's also incredibly dangerous. Trapped in a post-apocalyptic environment where the only way to survive is to compete in a series of increasingly deadly games, Ryohei and his friends have no choice except to adapt or perish.

Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, and so on. The characterisation is very strong, illustrating how hard the Disney team worked to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. --Tom Keogh

Alice in Wonderland the haunting nightmarish 1966 BBC Television version writ-ten and directed by Jonathan Miller and starring Peter Sellers Sir John Gielgud Sir Michael Redgrave Wilfrid Brambell Peter Cook Alan Bennett John Bird Leo McKern and Anne-Marie Mallik as Alice. Shot in pinpoint ghostly black and white with a dream-like editing schematic actors dressed not in costumes but in period clothes and a jarring seductive beautiful score by Ravi Shankar this Alice in Wonderland is like no other version you'll see of the Lewis Carroll classic. Alice in Wonderland is a dark nightmarish excursion into pointless almost listlessmadness...which makes it even more off-putting and uncomfortable in its rigid diffidence. Alice in Wonderland doesn't look like anything I've ever associated with the literary source. Instead Miller gives us an Alice who sleepwalks through increasingly madden-ing scenes that although she says she's a bit confused by them on the soundtrack she doesn't appear fazed by them at all.

A photographer finds himself saddled with a young girl whom he must return home, in Wim Wenders' international breakthrough. Philip Winter (Wenders regular Rüdiger Vogler) is at a New York airport when he encounters a young mother. Before he knows it, he is stuck with the woman's nine-year-old daughter (Yella Rottländer), with no information regarding where in Germany she lives. Arriving home, the photographer and his young charge make their way around the country in an attempt to return her to her family. Philip and Alice's bond grows stronger as he documents the way the German landscape has changed, emerging from the decades-long impact of the Second World War. The first entry in Wenders' loose road trilogy it was followed by _Wrong Movement_ and _Kings of the Road_ is one of his most charming films. Vogler is at his charismatic best, and Rottländer proved herself to be a strong screen presence. A stunning European road movie a genre that for so long was dominated by US film production Wenders' drama is as spirited as it is evocative.

This is an impressive-looking version of Lewis Carroll's story originally produced for American television. Dreading a singing recital at her parents' lavish home, Alice falls into a strange world in pursuit of a large White Rabbit. The talented child actor Tina Majorino (Corrina, Corrina) plays Alice with all the good graces but mostly wanders through the story unquestioningly. Carroll's tale of whimsical, illogical adventures is a field day for designers Roger Hall and Alan Tomkins, costumer Charles Knode, Jim Henson's Creature Shop and director Nick Willing (Photographing Fairies). Influenced by Time Bandits and Labyrinth (the latter also designed by the Henson company), the film has a splendid array of effects, many dealing with multiple perspectives as Alice constantly changes sizes. The highlight is Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire Cat, a seamless mix of cat and comic. Martin Short as the Hatter and Mirandra Richardson as the Queen of Hearts seem to be having the times of their lives. This is not the definitive version of Carroll's tale, and, like the popular Disney animated version, combines some elements of Carroll's sequel, Through the Looking Glass. It is perhaps better viewing for the fan that has seen another version of the tale or read the book. --Doug Thomas, Amazon.com
