  • Creature From the Black Lagoon (Limited Edition Steel Book) [Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray] [1954] [Region Free]Creature From the Black Lagoon (Limited Edition Steel Book) | Blu Ray | (06/10/2014) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £29.99

Jack Arnold's horror classic The Creature from the Black Lagoon spawned not one but two iconic images: the web-footed humanoid gill-man with a hankering for women and the leggy, luscious Julia Adams, the object of his desire, swimming the lagoon in a luminous white bathing suit. Not since King Kong has the "beauty and the beast" theme been portrayed in such sexually charged (though chaste) terms. Arnold turns an effectively B-movie plot--a small expedition up a remote Amazon river captures a prehistoric amphibian man, who escapes to wreak havoc on the team and kidnap his bathing beauty--into a moody, stylish, low-budget feature. The jungle exteriors turn from exotic to treacherous when the creature blocks their passage and strands them in the wilds. Much of the film is shot underwater, where the murky dark is animated by shimmering shards of sunlight, creating images both lovely and alien (the studio-built sets of the creature's underground lair are far less naturalistic, but serve their purpose). As with most of Arnold's '50s genre films, he's saddled with a less than magnetic leading man (in this case the colorless but stalwart Richard Carlson) and a conventional script, but he overcomes such limitations by creating a vivid and sympathetic monster (helped immeasurably by a marvelous suit of scales and fins) and establishing a mood thick with atmosphere. The film was originally shot in 3-D. --Sean Axmaker

When Amy is suddenly stricken by the random idea she will die tomorrow, a bizarre phenomenon starts passing through her social circle, where each and every person is eventually hit by the same realisation they will not last until the next sunrise, despite there being no obvious reason to believe this. Rather than riffing on the notion of contagion as conventional plague, Amy Seimetz's She Dies Tomorrow takes an abstract route into the subject, one which recalls films such as Pulse, where contagion features a strong existential element, in its sometimes absurdly comic, yet deeply unsettling, exploration of a group of people facing imminent unexplained death. As such, the film fits neatly into the stable of Lynchian horror, which seeks to explore genre by breaking down boundaries and enhancing sensory elements such as the use of hallucinatory colour and dreamlike sequences. Product Features High-Definition digital transfer approved by writer-director Amy Seimetz Original 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound A 'Making of' featurette with Seimtez and cinematographer Jay Keitel Newly filmed interviews with stars Kate Lynn Sheil and Jane Adams She Dies Tomorrow and The Viral Apocalypses of the Future: A visual essay on contagion in modern horror by Anton Bitel Audio commentary by critic and programmer Anna Bogutskaya Original trailer

The raffish star, with his distinctive laugh, trademark tweeds and enduring catchphrase, was created in 1963, diligently learning his trade before hitting the big time in the 1970s in his own show. The cheeky vulpine host went on to vex a succession of "Mr"s with his continual interrupting, ad-libbing and appalling jokes:Mr Roy: "Do you know about ethics?"Basil, lisping: "Yes, it's somewhere near Sussex, isn't it?"The show's guest list boasted the best of 1970s celebrity: Alvin Stardust, Cilla Black, John Inman and Demis Roussos to mention just a few--all treated to Basil's unique blend of charm and brusque wit in a series of excruciating sketches. The show was dropped in the 1980s but Boom, Boom! The Best Of The Original Basil Brush Show proves that Basil, now a pop-culture icon, is a truly 21st-century fox. --Helen Baker

  • Octopussy [Blu-ray] [1983]Octopussy | Blu Ray | (04/02/2013) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. There's an island populated only by women, as well as a fantastic sequence with a hand-to-hand fight on a plane--and on top of a plane. The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old licence to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. --Robert Horton, Amazon.com On the DVD: The high standard of these 007 discs is maintained here, with another extra-packed selection. The "Inside Octopussy" documentary details the making of the movie, which faced competition from Sean Connery's Never Say Never Again, as well as being handicapped by a potentially risible title. The initial story was developed by George Macdonald Fraser, author of the "Flashman" books, whose knowledge of Indian history and locales proved invaluable. Roger Moore prevaricated about signing on as Bond, so American James Brolin was screen-tested instead. The movie also produced the worst accident of the series while filming the train sequence and the stuntman involved was hospitalised for six months. Director John Glen provides a solo commentary that reveals a wealth of technical detail and also that this is one of his favourite Bond movies. Rita Coolidge performs "All Time High", and there are also some storyboard sequences and trailers. --Mark Walker
