  Lieutenant Diamond (Cornel Wilde, The Naked Prey) is determined to bring down mob boss Mr Brown (Richard Conte, Thieves Highway), even if it means jeopardising his own career, but the feeling is mutual and the unscrupulous gangster is more than willing to operate outside the law to get his man. The confrontation escalates, leading to some wince-inducing set-pieces involving such handy props as a radio and a hearing aid. This masterpiece from Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy, Terror in a Texas Town), drenched with sleazy innuendo, came late to the film noir cycle, but is now considered one of the defining examples of the genre, not least thanks to some extraordinary chiaroscuro lighting by the great cinematographer John Alton (already an Oscar-winner for An American in Paris) and a heartbreaking performance by Jean Wallace (No Blade of Grass) as Brown s troubled girlfriend. The film also boasts a menacing early performance from a pre-stardom Lee Van Cleef (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as one of Brown s henchmen. Sebastian a suave ladies' man instantly takes a liking to Holly despite their jealous rivalry. Holly and Sebastian carry on their feud high in the air with an audience watching performing a dangerous show of one-upmanship. While the two duel in the air sparks fly on the ground and Brad is too busy running the grand show to notice. This gutsy star-studded spectacle was produced in cooperation with Ringling Brothers - Barnum and Bailey circus and filmed in a pseudo-documentary style with frequent cuts from the full-scale grandiose circus acts and larger-than-life costumes by the legendary Edith Head to real footage of the daily life on the road for the full-scale travelling operation. Jimmy Stewart co-stars in a gem of a role as Buttons the clown who is hiding from a mysterious past. This cavalcade of jaw-dropping visual splendour complete with lions elephants and an action-packed train wreck of a finale is DeMille at his grandiose best. Look for many small guest appearances from circus stars and celebrities including Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

  Cornel Wilde produced directed and starred in this sincere hard-edged look at World War II that doesn't flinch from the horrors of battle. As a US marine unit fight against the defenders of a Japanese-held island both sides are haunted by their own thoughts and memories. The action takes place during a single American campaign to take an island held by the Japanese. Brief flashbacks to civilian life are the only escape from the gritty dreary setting. The usual cliché characters are replaced by new ones such as the captain (Wilde) who loves his wife but hates the war the sergeant (Rip Torn) who gets sadistic pleasure out of battle the minister's son (Patrick Wolfe) who keeps remembering the girl he left back home and the Southern illiterate (Burr DeBenning) who finds a place for himself in the Marines. The screenplay (from a 1945 novel by Peter Bowman) avoids stereotypes yet doesn't make any of these men into fleshed-out characters. Still the acting is solid and Wilde deserves commendation for taking a harsh unromanticised look at the Big One over thirty years before Steven Spielberg did it with Saving Private Ryan.
