Cornel Wilde (Shockproof), Victoria Shaw (The Crimson Kimono), and Mickey Shaughnessy (Jailhouse Rock) star in Edge of Eternity, a riveting murder mystery from director Don Siegel (Madigan, Charley Varrick). When a series of killings plagues an Arizona ghost town on the edge of the Grand Canyon, Deputy Sherrif Martin (Wilde) forms an unlikely partnership with playgirl Janice (Shaw) to investigate. Made on location, and shot in CinemaScope by the great Burnett Guffey (The Sniper, The Reckless Moment), Edge of Eternity is one of Don Siegel's most arresting and thrilling crime films.
Known mostly as an actor of the studio era, Cornel Wilde took on a parallel career as an independent producer, writer, and director to create a series of films that explored man in the midst of extreme dramatic situations — and The Naked Prey is perhaps his most personal and violent rumination. Set in nineteenth-century Africa’s colonial periods, Wilde portrays an unnamed safari guide whose group encounters and subsequently insults a local tribe. Following the execution of the other party members, Wilde alone is the last to be spared and is given a head start to elude his pursuers as game to be hunted for retributive satisfaction, unless and until he can attain safety… The Naked Prey remains a special entry in the cinema of actors-turned-auteurs, which also includes such luminaries as Robert Montgomery, Charles Laughton, and Ida Lupino. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Wilde’s most ruthless picture for the first time in the UK in a special Dual Format special edition.
Leave Her to Heaven is one of the most unblinkingly perverse movies ever offered up as a prestige picture by a major studio in the golden age of Hollywood. Gene Tierney, whose lambent eyes, porcelain features, and sweep of healthy-American-girl hair customarily made her a 20th Century Fox icon of purity, scored an Oscar nomination playing a demonically obsessive daughter of privilege with her own monstrous notion of love. By the time she crosses eyebeams with popular novelist Cornel Wilde on a New Mexico-bound train, her jealous manipulations have driven her parents apart and her father to his grave. Well, no, not grave: Wilde soon gets to watch her gallop a glorious palomino across a red-rock horizon as she metronomically sows Dad's ashes to the winds. Mere screen moments later, she's jettisoned rising-politico fiancé Vincent Price and accepted a marriage proposal the besotted/bewildered Wilde hasn't quite made. Can the wrecking of his and several other lives be far behind? Not to mention a murder or two. Fox gave Ben Ames Williams's bestselling novel (probably just the sort of book Wilde's character writes) the Class-A treatment. Alfred Newman's tympani-heavy music score signals both grandeur and pervasive psychosis, while spectacular, dust-jacket-worthy locations and Oscar-destined Technicolor cinematography by Leon Shamroy ensure our fixed gaze. Impeccably directed by the veteran John M. Stahl (who'd made the original Back Street, Imitation of Life, and Magnificent Obsession a decade earlier), the result is at once cuckoo and hieratic, and weirdly mesmerizing. Bet Luis Buñuel loved it. --Richard T. Jameson

Forever Amber
Lieutenant Diamond (Cornel Wilde, The Naked Prey) is determined to bring down mob boss Mr Brown (Richard Conte, Thieves Highway), even if it means jeopardising his own career, but the feeling is mutual and the unscrupulous gangster is more than willing to operate outside the law to get his man. The confrontation escalates, leading to some wince-inducing set-pieces involving such handy props as a radio and a hearing aid. This masterpiece from Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy, Terror in a Texas Town), drenched with sleazy innuendo, came late to the film noir cycle, but is now considered one of the defining examples of the genre, not least thanks to some extraordinary chiaroscuro lighting by the great cinematographer John Alton (already an Oscar-winner for An American in Paris) and a heartbreaking performance by Jean Wallace (No Blade of Grass) as Brown s troubled girlfriend. The film also boasts a menacing early performance from a pre-stardom Lee Van Cleef (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as one of Brown s henchmen. When the film was revived in London in the mid-seventies, a polemically breathless Time Out review called it almost certainly the greatest movie ever made... as heady as amyl nitrate andas compulsive as stamping on insects . Cornel Wilde, Paul Muni and Merle Oberon: a classic line-up of ageless talent in a film that has become an evergreen to millions of music lovers. It's the true story of Frederic Chopin, towering romantic pianist and composer, frail in body but fiery in spirit. It's the story of his eternal music, of the brilliant women who inspired it, of his fight for the freedom of his beloved Poland and his tragic death in the full flower of his genius. Charles Vidor, finest of all romantic film-makers, directs.
Two Columbia noirs from the pen of Samuel Fuller. The Greatest Show On Earth is a dazzling spectacle of life behind the scenes with Ringling Brothers - Barnum and Bailey Circus the best three-ring circus in the land. The great showman Cecil B. DeMille produced and directed this splashy colourful look at life under the big top. Charlton Heston stars as Brad Braden the beloved circus manager who runs a tight ship with integrity and a big heart. In an effort to bring in enough money to guarantee a full tour Brad hires the Great Sebastian (Cornel Wilde) a daredevil trapeze star to replace his girlfriend Holly (Betty Hutton) a beautiful and talented trapeze artist who had been promised the coveted centre-ring spot. Sebastian a suave ladies' man instantly takes a liking to Holly despite their jealous rivalry. Holly and Sebastian carry on their feud high in the air with an audience watching performing a dangerous show of one-upmanship. While the two duel in the air sparks fly on the ground and Brad is too busy running the grand show to notice. This gutsy star-studded spectacle was produced in cooperation with Ringling Brothers - Barnum and Bailey circus and filmed in a pseudo-documentary style with frequent cuts from the full-scale grandiose circus acts and larger-than-life costumes by the legendary Edith Head to real footage of the daily life on the road for the full-scale travelling operation. Jimmy Stewart co-stars in a gem of a role as Buttons the clown who is hiding from a mysterious past. This cavalcade of jaw-dropping visual splendour complete with lions elephants and an action-packed train wreck of a finale is DeMille at his grandiose best. Look for many small guest appearances from circus stars and celebrities including Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.
Dramatic musical directed by Nicholas Ray and starring Russell and Wilde as a gypsy couple whose marriage was prearranged by their relatives. Gypsy girl who lives by decamping with marriage settlements from wealthy men meets her match in the handsome younger brother of a gypsy king.
Cornel Wilde produced directed and starred in this sincere hard-edged look at World War II that doesn't flinch from the horrors of battle. As a US marine unit fight against the defenders of a Japanese-held island both sides are haunted by their own thoughts and memories. The action takes place during a single American campaign to take an island held by the Japanese. Brief flashbacks to civilian life are the only escape from the gritty dreary setting. The usual cliché characters are replaced by new ones such as the captain (Wilde) who loves his wife but hates the war the sergeant (Rip Torn) who gets sadistic pleasure out of battle the minister's son (Patrick Wolfe) who keeps remembering the girl he left back home and the Southern illiterate (Burr DeBenning) who finds a place for himself in the Marines. The screenplay (from a 1945 novel by Peter Bowman) avoids stereotypes yet doesn't make any of these men into fleshed-out characters. Still the acting is solid and Wilde deserves commendation for taking a harsh unromanticised look at the Big One over thirty years before Steven Spielberg did it with Saving Private Ryan.
This is a UK Region 2 DVD released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment in 2009.

This ultimate war collection brings you six classic movies of all time. Disc One Play Dirty An out-of-his-depth oil executive, Capt. Douglas (Michael Caine), is ordered to guide a tough band of convicts, including the cynical and possibly treacherous Capt. Leech (Nigel Davenport), to destroy a Nazi fuel depot in North Africa during World War II. Though it's probably a suicide mission, it has to be completed. But the mission, the enemy and the brutal desert aren't the only things Douglas has to worry about, as it becomes clear that Leech is undermining his authority at every turn Disc 2 Submarine X-1 A special group of navy divers is created when a disabled Nazi warship is discovered in a fjord in Norway. Commander Bolton (James Caan) is the Canadian expert designated to train the new unit. Their mission is to plant a bomb on the warship as it undergoes repairs. Their intense training operation is interrupted by an attack of Nazi paratroopers just before the unit leaves for Norway. Spectacular underwater photography is seen in this World War II adventure story based on an actual mission Disc 3 Hornet's Nest Rock Hudson stars as Captain Turner, leading a detachment of US Army paratrooper saboteurs dropped behind the German lines in Italy. Its mission is to blow up a strategic dam. However, the unit is ambushed and only Turner survives. Disc 4 Beach Red Ordered to help secure a heavily defended Japanese island during World War II, Captain MacDonald (Cornel Wilde) and his Marines land on Beach Red and proceed inland against stubborn, murderous resistance. MacDonald is supported by his tough-as-nails gunnery sergeant (Rip Torn), soulful Private Egan (Burr DeBenning) and a group of stalwart Marines who try to block out the horrors that surround them by remembering the women they love back home. Disc 5 Attack on the Iron Coast Commando Major Jamie Wilson plans an audacious Combined Operations raid on the Axis held French port of Le Clare; if destroyed the Germans would be stripped of their only dry dock capable of servicing their large battleships. Wilson's plan is to ram a destroyer packed with tons of explosives into the outer gate of the dock. Under pressure from Winston Churchill, Wilson's plan is given the go-ahead even though the naval craft requested for the mission are reduced to a minesweeper replacing the destroyer, no escort craft and only four motor launches. Disc 6 The 1000 Plane Raid Colonel Greg Brandon (Christopher George), an American serving at a Royal Air Force base in England, has a grand military dream: a risky plan to send a fleet of 1,000 bombers to a German airplane factory as a strategic strike. Brandon badgers his commanding officers until he has his way, losing friends and alienating people as he goes. When the raid arrives, Brandon sees the wisdom and valor of his fellow soldiers and realizes that caution is just as important as zeal.
