The Jack Bull | DVD | (07/06/2004)
from £19.99
| Saving you £-14.00 (N/A%)
| RRP The Jack Bull was produced for and premiered on American television network HBO, but it's easily the most respectable job that feature director John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, WarGames) has done in the past two decades. The title refers to a metaphorical Jack Russell terrier that, once it's annoyed enough to close its jaws on something, will hang on to the point of death. This terrier is Myrl Redding (John Cusack), a horse breeder of limited means who has a deeply entrenched sense of justice. His independence galls Henry Ballard (L Q Jones), the crusty land baron out to set his brand on most of the countryside. Ballard insults and cheats Redding several times over and his men beat Redding's Indian horse trainer and friend (Rodney A Grant). When Redding seeks redress from the law, its agents can't be bothered as the local magistrate is in Ballard's pocket. So Redding musters a vigilante army to enforce his own law. Scratch this handsome but rigorously unromanticised Western—a full hour passes without a shot being fired--and you find the classic Heinrich von Kleist book Michael Kohlhaas transposed to Wyoming Territory on the eve of statehood. The script--by the star/producer's dad, Dick Cusack--is sturdy and uncompromising and willing to engage the knotty ambiguities of embracing vigilantism even in a just cause. Badham's decision to treat the authorities (Scott Wilson, Jay O Sanders, John Goodman) as period caricatures is regrettable but John Cusack is solid as a figure of utterly matter-of-fact integrity. --Richard T. | RRP Matt Frei explores the unique city of Berlin an artificial metropolis - one that has not grown organically but always been contrived and redefined. Throughout its history it has been a laboratory of human behaviour thought and art. What began as a provincial town in the 17th century on a central European marsh became the very image of the messy development of human-kind during the 20th century. It is a place whose history we all feel caught up in in some way. Even if we have never visited we all feel touched by events that have taken place there because they are the universal stories of our time. Matt Frei is the BBC's Washington correspondent. Born in Germany he was sent by the BBC to Berlin in 1989 to report on the fall of the Wall. Now 20 years later he returns to take us on a fascinating journey through Berlin's history to reveal the true spirit of the city. Over three hour-long documentaries he explains this incredible city's ideas buildings and people. Dangerous Ideas explores how Berlin has been a crucible for radical thought - giving birth to communism and fascism theories of sex and sexuality eugenics and the atomic bomb - and how the price of such experimentation has been a history of bloodshed tyranny and violence. Ruined Visions tells a story of human creativity and destruction through the buildings of Berlin. From Friedrich the Second's imperial city and Bauhaus to the impact of Speers' Neo-classical Nazi dream and the Wall; what began as a 17th century provincial town became a city unique in the world. Ich Bin Ein Berliner reveals the spirit of Berlin's people characterised by their struggle for freedom. Having flocked to enjoy the city's religious toleration they took on the Nazis and risked their lives to cross the Wall - the iron rod of oppression and a thirst for liberty have shaped the Berliner.

| RRP This potent film from Michael Winterbottom (The Trip, 24 Hour Party People, A Cock and Bull Story) is a story of survival and love, a celebration of the small pleasures of everyday life. The father Ian (John Simm - Life On Mars, Doctor Who) is in prison. The mother Karen (Shirley Henderson - The Gruffalo, Meek's Cutoff) has to bring up a family of four children by herself. Filmed over a period of five years, Everyday uses the repetitions and rhythms of everyday life to explore how a family can survive a prolonged period apart. The story unfolds in a series of visits: first the family visiting the father in prison, later the father visiting the family at home. With each visit the distance between the children and their father becomes harder to bridge. By avoiding the normal cinematic conventions of time passing, Everyday focuses on the small subtle changes as people grow up and grow old whilst being apart.
