Futuristic Japanese animated feature. In a technologically-advanced society in the near future, where robots can be programmed to imitate complete human beings, a young girl's grief over her recently deceased boyfriend leads a scientist to devise a plan to get her enjoying life again. Ever since Kurimi (Yôko Hikasa)'s boyfriend passed away in a tragic plane accident, she has been in mourning and living a reclusive life. This all changes when her boyfriend's place is taken by a robot named Hal (Yoshimasa Hosoya) and Kurimi is forced to disregard her reservations and yield to the company of the robot. But will their artificial love be sustainable and will Hal be able to fully understand what it means to be a loving human being?
