  Bridget Jones's Diary Featuring a blowzy, winningly inept size-12 heroine, Bridget Jones's Diary is a fetching adaptation of Helen Fielding's runaway bestseller, grittier than Ally McBeal but sweeter than Sex and the City. The normally sylphlike Renée Zellweger (Nurse Betty, Me, Myself and Irene) wolfed pasta to gain poundage to play "singleton" Bridget, a London-based publicist who divides her free time between binge eating in front of the TV, downing Chardonnay with her friends, and updating the diary in which she records her negligible weight fluctuations and romantic misadventures of the year. Things start off badly at Christmas when her mother tries to set her up with seemingly standoffish lawyer Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), whom Bridget accidentally overhears dissing her. Instead she embarks on a disastrous liaison with her raffish boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant, infinitely more likeable when he's playing a baddie instead of his patented tongue-tied fops). Eventually, Bridget comes to wonder if she's let her pride prejudice her against the surprisingly attractive Mr. Darcy. If the plot sounds familiar, that's because Fielding's novel was itself a retelling of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, whose romantic male lead is also named Mr. Darcy. An extra ironic poke in the ribs is added by the casting of Firth, who played Austen's haughty hero in the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Austen's novel. First-time director Sharon Maguire directs with confident comic zest, while Zellweger twinkles charmingly, fearlessly baring her cellulite and pulling off a spot-on English accent. Like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill (both of which were written by this film's coscreenwriter, Richard Curtis), Bridget Jones's stock-in-trade is a very English self-deprecating sense of humour, a mild suspicion of Americans (especially if they're thin and successful), and a subtly expressed analysis of thirtysomething fears about growing up and becoming a "smug married." The whole is, as Bridget would say, v. good. --Leslie Felperin Bridget Jones 2: The Edge Of Reason Although it's been three years since we last saw Bridget (Renée Zellweger), only a few weeks have passed in her world. She is, as you'll remember, no longer a "singleton," having snagged stuffy but gallant Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) at the end of the 2001 film. Now she's fallen deeply in love and out of her neurotic mind with paranoia: Is Mark cheating on her with that slim, bright young thing from the law office? Will the reappearance of dashing cad Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant) further spell the end of her self-confidence when they're shoved off to Thailand together for a TV travel story? If such questions also seem pressing to you, this sequel will be fairly painless, but you shouldn't expect anything fresh. Director Beeban Kidron and her screenwriters--all four of them!--are content to sink matters into slapstick, with chunky Zellweger (who's unflatteringly photographed) the literal butt of all jokes. Though the star still has her charms, and some of Bridget's social gaffes are amusing, the film is mired in low comedy--a sequence in a Thai women's prison is more offensive than outrageous--with only Grant's rakish mischief to pull it out of the swamp. --Steve Wiecking

  Home cinema was practically invented for Die Hard movies. The first film in particular remains an unbeatable action classic, a mixture of taut situations, Bruce Willis in excellent form as John McClane, and some outstanding directorial work from John McTiernan. The sequels? Well, everyone has their favourite. Take your pick from Dulles International Airport being taken over by terrorists at Christmas, Willis and Samuel L Jackson joining forces to tear through New York City, or computer hackers looking to bring things to a standstill. It’s four films, rammed full of action, and unashamedly so. The main reason for upgrading the films to Blu-ray, in this case, is to see what’s been done with the physical presentation of them. The news here is good: the Die Hard Quadrilogy sparkles in high definition, with razor sharp imagery, and fast moving action flashing before your eyes. And then there’s the sound mix, a workout for whatever scale of speaker setup that you have. The deal is then sweetened by the inclusion of a varied collection of behind the scenes material for each of the films, with some of the archive pieces in particular being of real interest. Yet ultimately, it’s the four films, in tip-top condition, that make the Die Hard Quadrilogy a Blu-ray must-have. Top quality action, fabulous set pieces and excellent presentation: it’s a set not to be missed.

  Those already into Blu-ray will have a specific title and a particular scene up their sleeves to show off the benefits of Hi-Def home entertainment to the uninitiated. Here's a true great to add to the armoury (so to speak)--the first 20 minutes of action in Saving Private Ryan [Blu-ray] are as good a demonstration as you'll ever need to make someone say "wow". The true terror of the D-Day landings in World War II is brought to startling life in this high definition release--with the explosions jumping out of the screen and bullets zipping around your ears, you're brought as close to the front line as you can get without leaving the safety of your sofa--you will need reminding to breathe once that brutal, gut-wrenching opener is over. And it doesn't stop there. The rest of the film benefits from the Blu-ray clean up, it's looking brighter and sounding more crisp than ever before (as you would expect). One of the greatest war films ever made has been expertly enhanced and it's now an even more wonderful movie experience--the transfer to 1080p is exemplary.The extras are bountiful too, with over three hours of special features. The only criticism of the entire package is that only a couple of the extras are in Hi-Def, the rest are in standard definition. However, fans of the film won't be disappointed as extras from previous DVD releases are collated, including a great insight into Steven Spielberg's mind as he talks about his interest in World War II and how it led to him making this film. The notable addition to this version's extras being an extensive and fascinating documentary Shooting War, hosted by Tom Hanks, which follows the brave soldiers tasked with chronicling the war and all the horrors that came with it. It's a great account it's own right, so owners of this copy are given plenty to pore over. Make no mistake, the scene-stealer is the opener--it grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go for 20 agonising minutes--and if you're looking to enhance your collection, then look no further than this landmark release.--Tom Lawrance Special Features 2-disc Blu-ray edition. Fleeing for his freedom, Taylor soon makes a shocking discovery about the provenance of this strange planet. In 'Beneath the Planet of the Apes' (1970) astronaut Brent (James Franciscus) is on a special mission to rescue George Taylor. After travelling to the ape village where he was imprisoned, he meets Dr Zira and learns that Taylor was last seen in the Forbidden Zone. Setting off in pursuit he soon discovers that his colleague has been taken prisoner by an underground society of telepathic mutant humans who worship an atomic warhead.
