  Leonard Bernstein conducts masterworks by Gustav Mahler from the Grosser Musikvereinssaal in Wien and the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv.   This Russian Fireworks instalment of the "Naxos Musical Journey" series focuses on the wide geographical and cultural diversity of a vast country, from winter forest scenes near St Petersburg to the holiday resort of Yalta on the Black Sea, complemented by music drawn from a range of Russian composers linking the musical history of their homeland. The film opens with the Procession of the Sardar by Ippolitov-Ivanov with pictures of lakes and mountains in Uzbeksitan. Lyadovs charming Russian Folksongs begins east of Moscow in Suzdal, in the 13th-century cathedral. Rubinsteins Dance of the Bayaderes No. 2 takes us to Yalta, the lake resort where Chekov recovered from tuberculosis. A Galop by Kabalevsky underscores pedestrians running up and down the Potemkin steps in Odessa; while Mussorgsky accompanies scenes of the rich farm land round Kiev, Uzbekistan and oases on the silk-road to Samarkand. Lyadovs Baba Yaga is set in woods round St Petersburg, evoking the witch of Russian folk lore, and Kilimora, set in the same location, depicts a snowy landscape. The Enchanted Lake shows the Valday Heights, where the Volga rises. All these pieces are well played by the Slovak Philharmonic, following one another with very short breaks. On the DVD: Russian Fireworks comes with travel notes as a guide to each location in the filming. There are also brief composer biographies, and trailers for more "Musical Journeys".   Born in 1927, Andy Williams was performing from the age of 11 with his elder brothers, Bob, Dick and Dom as the Williams Brothers. He went solo in 1953 and recorded for RCA Victor and Cadence, finally achieving his first hit, 'Canadian Sunset' in 1956. He hit the Number 1 spot with 'Butterfly' in February 1957 and in 1959 was offered his own TV series by CBS. His popularity was such that Columbia gave him the most lucrative deal ever offered to a US artist. His most famous recording 'Moon River', sung by Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' was not actually a hit for him. He was asked to sing it at the Oscar's in 1962 where it won the Best Song award and became his theme song.   Since Schubert wrote his song-cycle Die Winterreise ("Winter Journey"), its psychological implications have only become more meaningful. These 24 songs, to poems by Wilhelm Müller, chart a journey in which the disappointed lover experiences desolation in his mind as much as in the outside world, culminating in a nowhere encounter with an organ-grinder--with whom he finds common cause. The term "Existential" hadn't been coined in the 1820s, but Winterreise sums up its central concerns with uncanny accuracy. Baritone Jorma Hynninen is a sensitive interpreter, neither overplaying the distinct character of each number, nor opting for a mood of sombre generalisation. Ralf Gothoni accompanies attentively, bringing out many subtleties in the spare piano writing. The setting of the Reidar Särestöniemi Museum in Lapland allows director Julie Didier to contrast the human ambience of the performing venue with the frozen landscape of the surroundings. Särestöniemi's paintings, alive with mythological imagery, feature prominently, as does the bearded gentleman sitting beneath one of them. On the DVD: Die Winterreise on disc is presented in 4:3 picture format that reproduces with excellent clarity, as does the PCM Stereo sound. Subtitles are in English, French, German and Spanish, and each song can be accessed separately. The Arthaus trailer, focusing on Maria Callas and Poulenc, is pointless as a special feature, though the enclosed booklet gives an overview of composer, music and performers that is more than adequate. --Richard Whitehouse
