After failed relationships with her previous waitstaff Doris meets Lafferty fresh out of rehab and without a penny to his name. Trust is their weapon. Innocence is their victim. Hollywood grande dame Faye Dunaway, the Oscar-winning star of such cinematic milestones as Bonnie and Clyde and Chinatown, gives a typically powerful performance as a domineering parent in this explosive drama about two lethal con-artists who kidnap the children of a struggling single mother, played by Desperate Housewives' Nicollette Sheridan. Garrett James (Oscar nominee Michael O'Keefe, Too Young To Die?) and his wife Donna seem the perfect neighbours. Kind, generous and desperate for children of their own, they are eagerly befriended by Anna Morse (Sheridan), a lonely waitress with three daughters who is fleeing from an abusive husband and who receives nothing but cold disapproval from her mother, Ellen (Dunaway). But the charismatic Jameses hide terrible secrets: they are wanted criminals, guilty of larceny and other, more deadly, schemes. Within no time at all, they have insinuated themselves into the children's lives while subtly undermining Anna's security. Suddenly, Garrett and Donna vanish, taking Anna's daughters with them. Receiving little help from the police or her mother, Anna has only one ally: Jack Driscoll (Ernie Lively, Overkill: The Aileen Wuornos Story), a hard-bitten cop who follows an intriguing trail of leads and uncovers horrific details of Garrett's psychotic past. Forced to cope with the realisation that her daughters are in the hands of a murderer, Anna must struggle to hold her life together while launching a valiant race against time to save them. The People Next Door is written by Fred Mills (Overkill: the Aileen Wuornos Story) and directed by Tim Hunter, whose controversial 1986 feature River's Edge (starring Keanu Reeves) was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival.

Chaplin, Sir Richard Attenborough's biographical film of the life and times of the famous comic, is a little thin as a narrative, but it is so charmingly creative and ultimately moving that it's hard to worry about the deficits. Robert Downey Jr does an excellent job re-creating Chaplin's graceful slapstick and getting inside the silent-film superstar's head over the years of triumph, defeat, scandal, official persecution, exile and inner peace. A huge cast portray the allies, friends, lovers and enemies in Chaplin's life, including Moira Kelly as his final, long-time wife Oona, Kevin Kline as Douglas Fairbanks, Geraldine Chaplin as Charlie's mother and James Woods as a prosecutor working hard to nail Chaplin for anti-American sentiments. Attenborough declines to tell the story in a flat, linear way, employing such clever techniques as detailing one chapter in Chaplin's life as a silent comedy. The climactic scene set at an Oscar tribute for Chaplin will get the tears flowing. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

Chantal Akerman's La Captive is a deceptively simple story following the fascination of a wealthy young man for his apparently innocent and lovely girlfriend. Only loosely drawn from Proust's La Prisonniere, the Proustian elements are often largely submerged. Yet as a study in obsession it is balanced somewhere between Death in Venice and Vertigo. A chase through the streets of--an apparently timeless but actually contemporary--Paris, this is a picture of inexplicable obsession, moved along by fragments of whispered dialogue and a glimpse of bizarre daily ritual. With much of the story framed within the odd anti-hero Simon's grandiose apartment (which he appropriately shares with an ailing, rarely glimpsed grandmother), the film cleverly avoids suffocating its viewers by giving odd gasps of breath from the cheeky, light encounters between his girlfriend Ariane and the beautiful Andree--friends, or possibly sometime lovers. As a portrait of a relationship, La Captive will keep its viewers absorbed with its elegant tone and its intriguing and inexplicable story; but it might just as easily frustrate with its unresolved twists and turns.--Tricia Tuttle

"Summer" is a film about a man full of intelligence and potential struggling to reclaim his life.
Destined to remain a dubious footnote in books of movie trivia, Lion of the Desert--an occasionally impressive epic from 1981--was financed with a budget of $35 million by Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi, who previously attempted the role of movie producer with the critically roasted Mohammad: Messenger of God. This effort didn't fare much better (it grossed approximately $1 million worldwide), and although some of its wartime action sequences are intelligently filmed, it's not likely to gain much more of a reputation on home video. Under a shaggy Muslim beard, Anthony Quinn stars as Omar Mukhtar, the Arab hero and guerrilla fighter who defended Libya against Benito Mussolini and Italy's attempted conquests during World War II. As straightforward biography, the movie's got an admirable epic sweep, but a cliché-ridden script and uniformly bad performances (from a cast that includes John Gielgud, Oliver Reed and Rod Steiger) make this little more than a curiosity for those wanting to learn more about Libyan history. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
