Director Oliver Marchal is a former Parisian policeman and the story of 36 Quai des Orfevres draws on his own experiences of the police force as well as those of Dominique Loiseau who was a senior member of the BRI (Search and action Squad) in the mid-eighties and worked as a consultant on the film. Leo Vrinks (Auteuil) and Denis Klein (Depardieu) are at the head of two different departments of the Paris police force located at Quai des Orfevres. French police drama. In Paris, within the space of a year, a gang of vicious armed robbers has committed seven violent robberies. Detectives Klein (Gerard Depardieu) and Vrinks (Daniel Auteuil), once close friends but now bitter professional rivals, are each heading up different departments and are charged with bringing the gang to justice. Whoever does so will become the new Chief of Police, but the competition forces the two men to gradually abandon their sense of duty, professionalism, and even morality, as they ruthlessly compete for the ultimate prize.

In the underbelly of the Parisian criminal world, the Police are frustrated by a gang committing a series of violent robberies. Leo Vrinks and Denis Klein are two cops seeking promotion and the imminent departure of the Chief sets the scene for them to compete for the vacant throne. Their competition between them becomes increasingly ruthless and blurs the usual lines of morality until there seems no difference between the police and the criminals they chase. Vrinks, meeting with a source, becomes involved with a murder. Klein seizes the opportunity to up the ante and arranges for the arrest of Vrinks but when he goes further and viciously involves Vrinks' wife, Camille, revenge is inevitable.
