Escape From Alcatraz DVD

| DVD

One of Clint Eastwood's two most important filmmaking mentors was Don Siegel (the other was Sergio Leone), who directed Eastwood in Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, Two Mules for Sister Sara and this enigmatic, 1979 drama based on a true story about an escape from the island prison of Alcatraz. Eastwood plays a new convict who enters into a kind of mind game with the chilly warden (Patrick McGoohan) and organises a break leading into the treacherous waters off San Francisco. As jailbird movies go, this isn't just a grotty, unpleasant experience but a character-driven work... with some haunting twists. --Tom Keogh [show more]

In 29 years, the seemingly impenetrable federal penitentiary, which housed Al Capone and 'Birdman' Robert Stroud, was only broken once - by three men never heard of again.   Eastwood portrays Frank Morris, the cunning bank robber who masterminded the elaborately detailed escape; Patrick McGoohan is a superb counterpoint as the suspicious warden.   Filmed on location in Alcatraz, this gritty and realistic re-enactment of the true story has all the power one expects from an Eastwood/Siegel movie.

Classic prison break drama starring Clint Eastwood. Frank Morris (Eastwood) is a prisoner on the legendary Alcatraz island, a place where it is said that all attempts at escape are futile, but he refuses to believe the hype and together with a group of dedicated inmates, begins drawing up the plans which will eventually lead to the only successful escape attempt in the prison's history.
