America is in the grip of the Great Depression when Natty Gann's (Meredith Salinger) father (Ray Wise) leaves Chicago to get work. Before his departure he promises his daughter he'll send for her when he's got some money together. Feisty and impatient, Natty, however, cannot wait and runs off to find him. Her journey is challenging, but along the way she finds some good companions - a gentle wolf and a tramp called Harry.
