Far from it. He is, in fact, a failed actor. His Illustrious Theatre Troupe, founded the previous year, is bankrupt. Hounded by creditors, Molière is thrown into jail, released, then swiftly imprisoned again. When the jailors finally let him go, he disappears. The combined efforts of historians have unearthed no trace of him before his reappearance, several months later, when his troupe begins touring the provinces - a tour that will last for thirteen years, and culminate in Molière's triumphant return to Paris in 1658. French comedy directed by Laurent Tirard. In 1644, the French playwright and actor Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known as Moliere (Romain Duris) was just 22 years old. Crippled with debt and hounded by the bailiffs, he persisted in staging undeniably bad tragedies. And then, one day, after having been imprisoned by his impatient creditors and released, he disappeared without a trace. This story attempts to explain the missing months of the great writer's life before his rise to fame.
