If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasises her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls... onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon [show more]
Although quite a few years old now we have watched this film loads of times - my wife and daughter love it and watch it several times a year. Well acted - great storyline and funny
John Turteltaub's While You Were Sleeping is a modern romantic comedy that despite its outrageous fairytale plot is surprisingly realistic and touching. This is mainly down to Sandra Bullock's performance as the shy kooky heroine Lucy Moderatz, a captivating tollbooth clerk, who's alone in the world. Every day she sees the same people pass by her to catch the train and one particular man always captures her attention. Lucy has been smitten with Peter Callaghan, a city lawyer since she first saw him, but so far they've never even spoken. On Christmas day, the handsome Peter falls onto the rails and Lucy saves his life. After a number of mix-ups Peter's family is misguided into thinking that Lucy is Peter's fiancée and she doesn't have the heart to correct them. She's warmly adopted into the family and they all fall in love with her hapless nature, but none more than Jack, Peter's brother.
Feel-good romantic comedies don't come much more breezy and captivating than this. Lucy's dilemma will draw you in and her longing for a family will steal your heart again and again! If that's not enough the chemistry between Lucy and Jack is electric and their mannerisms toward each will give you a warm fuzzy feeling.
Despite being a little predictable, While You Were Sleeping is a fun, tender and spirited film with an unerring comic touch. It will have you close to tears one minute and laughing out loud the next - a truly classic romantic comedy!
